And, we are having mixed feelings about the show, for sure. First things first, the opening episode was a downer. Though Salman tried to pep up the proceedings with his goofy antics and candid humour, it still left us cold. In 2007, "Alvin and the Chipmunks," a global phenomenon to generations of fans, became a live action/CGI motion picture event with a contemporary comic sensibility. In the holiday season blockbuster, which grossed over $350 million worldwide, songwriter Dave Seville transformed singing chipmunks Alvin, Simon and Theodore into pop sensations -- while the out-of-control trio laid waste to Dave’s home, wreaked havoc on his career, and turned Dave’s once-orderly life upside-down.

Before you could say, "Alvinnnnn!!!" talks began about a new "Alvin and the Chipmunks" movie. Not content to rest on their laurels, the 'Munks are preparing yet another "first": There have been many great movie sequels. There have even been prequels. Now, get ready for the world's first "Squeakquel," in which Alvin, Simon and Theodore finally meet their match – and maybe more – in the newly arrived female trio, The Chipettes.

Call it a Christmas miracle, albeit a minor one: "Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel" isn't entirely awful.

In fact, for its young (or merely immature) target audience -- your average fourth-grader -- this sequel to the 2007 feature about an animated trio of squeaky-voiced singing rodents is a fair sight better than the original.

That's not saying a lot, admittedly. The first film held essentially the same appeal as a party balloon filled with helium. Sure, it makes people sound funny, just like fur-ball protagonists Alvin, Theodore and Simon, in fact. As in the earlier film, they're voiced by Justin Long, Jesse McCartney and Matthew Gray Gubler, in a CGI version of the novelty musical act created by Ross Bagdasarian in 1958. But how far can you go with that one joke?

Fortunately, there's a bit more of an actual story here, with the introduction of three female chipmunks, voiced by talented comedians Christina Applegate, Amy Poehler and Anna Faris (though you'd never recognize them from their computer-enhanced, adenoidal whines). Known as the Chipettes, this distaff singing trio serves as both music-industry rivals to and love interests for the "boys," as Alvin and his brothers are known. Reprising his role as evil record executive Ian Hawke, David Cross lends the movie a distinctly goofy edginess -- a gift for Mom and Dad, presumably. At one point, Cross's character takes a full-frontal hit in the groin from an errant toy motorcycle.

Such is the level of humor in a movie whose biggest laugh comes from a scene in which one of the chipmunks is trapped under a blanket with his flatulent human caretaker (Zachary Levi). Levi's character, Toby, is a last-minute fill-in for the chipmunks' more familiar ward, Dave (Jason Lee), who's forced to sit out much of the film in a body cast after a particularly nasty, chipmunk-induced accident.

Director Betty Thomas ("The Brady Bunch Movie") manages all of this middlebrow mayhem with a suitably light touch. "Fantastic Mr. Fox," it's not. But as talking animal movies go, this "Squeakquel" just squeaks by.

As far as filmmaking snags go, the death of your lead actor is a pretty major deal. Such untimely departures usually result in the scrapping of the whole project, but when the filmmakers plough on, the results get interesting: a cardboard cutout of Bruce Lee in The Game of Death, the not-so creative use of outtakes in The Trail of the Pink Panther, the masterfully awful Plan 9 From Outer Space from the legendary Ed Wood…

It had to happen to Terry Gilliam of course. As a filmmaker, Gilliam has earned a reputation for not merely courting disaster but positively wooing it, as captured in the Making and Breaking Of A Film documentary Lost in La Mancha a few years ago. Still, there was no way he could have anticipated Heath Ledger’s death during the making of his latest movie, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus – but this was one project that couldn’t and shouldn’t have been left unfinished.

Doctor Parnassus (Christopher Plummer) is an ancient medicine man who treks through modern London with his travelling show, the ‘Imaginarium’, and his troupe of performers: the diminutive Percy (Verne Troyer in a one-off role where he isn’t the butt of Mike Myers gags), the merry Anton (Andrew Garfield) and his restless daughter Valentina (model Lily Cole, her wide-set eyes scanning the pages of a homes magazines in wonder). The group puts on a show that takes audience participation to a whole new level: punters are invited to pass through Doctor Parnassus’s mirror into a fantasy-land hewn from the stuff that dreams are made of. Their own dreams, that is.

After one of their late-night performances, Doctor Parnassus is compelled to renegotiate an old wager with the Devil, who wears a bowler hat and goes by the moniker of Mr. Nick (Tom Waits, perfectly cast): the first to seduce five souls will win the soul of Valentina on her sixteenth birthday. Soon after they strike the new deal, the travelling players chance upon Heath Ledger’s character, Tony – his first appearance in the film is laced with chilling irony – a man in a dapper white suit who seems to have lost his memory but may have dark secrets of his own.

This is a story that only Gilliam could tell. It is closest in spirit to The Adventures of Baron Munchausen (whose screenwriter Charles McKeown also co-writes here): a visually sumptuous fantasy with surrealist landscapes, Botticelli-inspired nudity, occasional bursts of Looney Tunes logic, Monty Python lunacy (especially the sudden appearance of the giant head of an English bobby), and a climactic sequence straight out of Alice in Wonderland. It’s a feast for the eyes where the courses just keep on coming.

But does it make sense? Gilliam’s work, which tends to be made on his own terms, is convoluted at the best of times – even when his actors do him the courtesy of staying alive during the production. It comes as something of a surprise then that The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus actually holds together pretty well, despite having been reconfigured in the eleventh hour. Yes, there are different incarnations of Tony – played by Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell – but this device turns out to make sense beyond Doctor Parnassus’s looking-glass. It’s also a lot of fun. Johnny Depp is, as usual, impeccable, his Keef Richards-cum-Jack Sparrow gait immediately recognisable as he hops Disney cartoon lily pads in another inspired blue-screen sequence – and his resemblance to Ledger here is rather striking, it must be said.

The character of Tony, and his role in the story, could be tidier. All eyes will naturally be on Ledger’s last performance, and it’s a shame that it’s a bit of a loose end in this tapestry. Some of the extended flights of fancy will test the patience of the average filmgoer too – this is far from being a conventional piece of cinema, and not everyone will be fond of the Jungian dreamscapes conjured up here.

Still, for those who’ve been barracking for Gilliam, the Don Quixote of the industry, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus is ample proof that he’s riding tall once again. It’s a dazzling piece of work, made all the more remarkable by the real-world events that conspired against it. In this way, it’s a story, on more than one level, of the triumph of the imagination

Sherlock Holmes Movie Review :

It's become a central truth of American filmmaking that audiences will watch Robert Downey Jr. doing pretty much anything, and when he's having as much fun as he is as the magnetic center of Sherlock Holmes, there's no choice but to be swept along for the ride. Effectively remaking the original Pirates of the Caribbean as a Victorian London caper, Guy Ritchie combines his kinetic direction with the limitless charms of Downey Jr and Jude Law to come up with terrific entertainment that's equal parts brains and brawn, American recklessness and English manners. In short, it's a blast.

The movie is structured essentially as an adventure romance, as Holmes (Downey Jr.) and Watson (Law) try to break up and, through crooked schemes and explosions and near escapes, realize by the end how much they mean to one another after all. At the beginning Watson is preparing to move out of 221b Baker Street, with plans to propose to pretty and proper Mary (Kelly Reilly) and leave the detective business entirely. Holmes, bored and hilariously jealous, attempts to sabotage Watson's engagement and also draw him back into the game, now that an old closed case has suddenly reopened.

Months earlier Watson and Holmes put away Lord Blackwood (Mark Strong), an aristocrat who murdered five people via some kind of dark arts ceremony. Watson himself supervised Blackwood's hanging, but when he appears to have risen from the dead, everyone from the police to a secret cabal wants to know how he did it. Blackwood and his legion of followers have plans for world domination via drinking potions and other hocus pocus, while Holmes goes about finding Blackwood in the only way he knows how-- using his "not inconsiderable knowledge" and foolproof logic. Meanwhile, Holmes's old flame Irene Adler (Rachel McAdams) is back in town, a criminal beauty working secretly for a shadowy boss with a penchant for fancy weaponry. Adler pops up from time to time to help Watson and Holmes in their investigations, and it's clear to the audience that she'll throw a wrench in things even when Holmes hasn't quite gotten there.

Dipping into chemistry and pentagrams and the earliest forms of electricity, the plot is all over the place, and I'm not entirely certain I understand how it all fit together in the end. But the story really just provides a vehicle for the action and the fantastic character interactions, one of which delivers slightly better than the other. While some action setpieces, like a fight at a shipyard and the final race against the clock, are brilliantly structured, the fight choreography gets chopped up into bits, with Ritchie cutting too quickly for the audience to see a punch or a kick all the way through. The editing often works directly at odds with Downey Jr.'s physicality, as he throws in a funny movement or a particularly sweet punch, only to see it lost entirely to needless slo-mo and quick cuts.

Then again, all that Ritchie noodling works great in Holmes's investigation scenes, allowing him visual flashbacks to all the clues that led him to his conclusions and avoiding the dreadful slowness that comes with most mystery-solving monologues. Miraculously the audience is right there with Holmes even during his most out-there epiphanies, and the equally out-there camerawork pays off well in making this period piece feel unstuffy, but also not gimmicky. He's helped immensely by Hans Zimmer's loose, wily score, one of the best action movie scores I've heard in years.

When Ritchie holds the camera relatively still and lets all of the actors play off each other, there's nothing better. Eddie Marsan is hilarious as the frustrated Inspector Lestrade, and Strong's Blackwood makes for a great intellectual equal against Holmes, but when Downey Jr. and Law are together the screen lights up so brightly it could catch fire. Bantering like Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell or trading off punches in a fight, the two actors have rarely looked so self-assured or in synch with an onscreen partner. Watson and Holmes squabble over clothes and the dog, tend one another's wounds and protect one another from injury, and generally make the best action-adventure duo since Indy and Marion. The one downside to all this energy between the boys is that Adler is sold short, flitting in and out of the plot seemingly at random, and rarely getting much out of Sherlock beyond a stolen kiss or two. McAdams is excellent and fiery in the role, but it seems much of her part was trimmed in order to make more room for Downey Jr. and Law. But oh, what a consolation prize that is.

As the movie winds down it begins to brazenly set up a sequel, and given the manifold adventures of Holmes and Watson that Arthur Conan Doyle wrote, it's hard to imagine two heroes better suited to a modern franchise. There are surely simpler Holmes stories to tell that won't get so bogged down in plot, and maybe there's a way to let the brains beat out the brawn next time, at least if the fights are going to stay so incomprehensible. But keep this iteration of Watson and Holmes together, and we're likely to follow them anywhere .

After Blackwood is tried and hung, he seemingly returns from the dead, so the duo have to continue their partnership to solve the case. Then Holmes' ex-girlfriend Irene Adler (Rachel McAdams), a jewel thief and criminal in her own right, seems to somehow be involved in the case.

Its Complicated Movie Review :

A womanizing lawyer who left Jane ten years ago after a twenty year marriage to run off with the tattooed young trophy sexpot named Agness (Lake Bell) that he's parading around, Jake turns up once again to painfully diplomatic Jane's dismay, when the family flies to New York to attend their son's college graduation. But this time around he's flying solo, having left Agness back home with her annoying, hyperactive love child, Pedro.

All of which incites in the philandering repeat offender Jake the urge to hit on his ex-wife, bad boy behavior made all the more irresistibly appealing to the faithless jerk when you factor in his libidinous addiction to extra-marital flings. And though Jane is more than wise to the incorrigible two-timer and hearing none of it, her perceptions are altered after one too many drinks with him at the hotel bar that night. End of story.

Which is where Jane's most unwelcome affair from hell gets a tad too complicated. So is she a co-conspirator in cheating on Jake's wife, or since the wife happens to also be the woman who helped him cheat on her, is this top secret tryst even from their own kids a guilt trip or a guilty pleasure?

To further convolute matters, a shy and insecure recently divorced architect (Steve Martin) renovating Jane's house is pursuing her as well. So what would any self-respecting desperate housewife do to escape such a wacky situation. According to Meyers, lighting up a joint with a doting architect is the best revenge. Or rather, 'poking smot.' While dumping all that mature adult decorum, and growing young and reckless together again.

Though the story takes a sharp right into stern family values weepie territory at the final stretch, up until the finish line Streep as a born again hottie not about to let midlife crisis rain on her parade, is a sheer blast. While a remarkably unembarrassed Baldwin as the aging paunchy super-stud in his own mind, is totally into setting himself up as the literal butt of jokes, when it comes to macho vanity and over the hill guy nudity.

What follows next and how Auro is instrumental and getting his estranged parents back together forms the rest of the film.

Paa is R. Balki’s next after the immensely lovable Cheeni Kum (2007). Balki had showcased glimpse of his brand of sarcastic humor in his debut film and with Paa he has completely established it. The film has been intelligently narrated cutting away from unnecessary melodrama. The pacing is just perfect. The selection of child actors (including Mr. Bachchan) deserves special mention. They act their natural self and are extremely hilarious. Paa has plenty of wonderfully written and enacted sequences like Auro’s conversations with his best buddy in school Vishnu, Auro’s sequences with his stuffed toy King Kong, Amol – Vidya’s argument over whether to keep their child or not, Amol exposing his detractors on live national television, Auro and Amol’s chilling out all day in Delhi, Amol realizing Auro is his own child and finally of course the climax.

With his Auro act, Amitabh Bachchan yet again proves he is the Paa of all his contemporaries where acting is concerned. The effortless manner, in which he has carried out such a challenging act, deserves a long standing ovation. He is definitely bound to win all the acting awards for this one. Abhishek Bachchan has put up a very mature act. In fact you may want to hate his character in the film initially, but full credit to him for making it very likeable. Vidya with her body language succeeds in communicating her single mom turmoil. She is effortless natural as well and looks wow. Arundhati Naag is very good. Paresh Rawal in a short role as Abhishek’s father is well restrained.

The film scores very high in the technical department. Music maestro Ilaiyaaraja’s music is melodious and perfectly interwoven with the film. His background scrore is super fresh. Anil Naidu’s editing and PC Sreeram’s cinematography are top notch.

Watch Paa with your Maa and Paa and one can confidently say that it is definitely bound to be an experience which you will remember for a long time. Paa will leave you with a tear in your eye but also a smile on your lips.

As the two try to get their hands on the ransom money, they meet characters like a Chinese Don, a hired assassin, an ACB officer, a club dancer, an ambassador, a young frustrated wife, a letch, a drunken waiter and a dead body nobody wants.

De Dana Dan follows the 3Cs of a Priyadarshan comedy – cash, confusion and lots of chases. Faithfully obeying his own template, the director could might as well have made this film in his sleep. Packing in almost two dozen characters in a hotel, De Dana Dan is one long comic ride. The basic premise involves a bunch of greedy conmen caught in a web of lies. Thankfully, it is actually funny in most parts.

There are a few things that catch you unawares in this comedy. Though the promotion has been driven around Akshay Kumar, Suniel Shetty, Katrina Kaif and Sameera Reddy, the four are just a part of the ensemble. In fact, for a good part of the second half, Kumar and Shetty go missing. And while ardent fans might complain, the character actors more than make up for their absence.

Johnny Lever, Manoj Joshi, Paresh Rawal, Rajpal Yadav, Asrani, Vikram Gokhale, Shakti Kapoor, Aditi Gowatriker and Neha Dhupia deliver a hilarious act. Of the lot, Archana Puran Singh's track is a little longer than desired.

Also those going in search of another Hera Pheri will be surprised by Rawal's zero interaction with the Kumar-Shetty duo. Strictly speaking in terms of structure, De Dana Dan is less Hera Pheri and more Hungama.

It's a film targeted at a mass audience looking for a light hearted joy ride at the theatre. While one might accuse Priyadarshan of silliness and moments of low brow humour, he deserves full credit for managing such a huge cast. Not once does the confusion go out of hand as the director is in full control of the proceedings. Each actor delivers an energetic performance doing full justice to the loud, over the top tone of thefilm.

Though the jokes and situations are not exactly new, the fast paced treatment elevates the impact of the film. In comparison to Akshay Kumar's other recent comedies, this one is several notches above. As for Priyadarshan, it is not a departure from his style, but far more entertaining than his Chup Chup Ke, Dhol and Bhagam Bhags. This time he sticks to the core plot and does not let the narrative lose track. After All The Best, this is yet another coherent, ensemble comedy this year.

The songs are mere speed breakers, giving the viewer to catch up on any missing link by checking with fellow audiences. However one can't forgive Priyadarshan for mercilessly editing out the much hyped AKshay-Katrina rain sequence. Not fair!

De Dana Dan doesn't aspire to be a Hrishikesh Mukherjee or Rajkumar Hirani product. It's got its goal clear and delivers what it promises.

Verdict: It would be harsh to run it down by drawing unnecessary comparisons with classic comedies. De Dana Dan has tremendous entertainment value. Given the style of most Bollywood comedies - De Dana Dan is the funniest film of the season.

Folks, there was not a single moment of respite in the 2 hours and 40-minutes we spent in the dark hall of the AMC Empire theater on 42nd St (near Times Square) in New York City on Wednesday.

$6 down the drain. Total waste of time and money.

Should you dare to bestow the blessings of your time and money on this junk, a painful migraine will be your reward too.

There were all of seven or eight people for the first show (10:25AM) of De Dana Dan at the AMC Empire, the sparse crowd perhaps a reflection of the lack of enthusiasm and zero buzz for this Akshay Kumar, Sunil Shetty, Katrina Kaif et al movie.

Given that Akshay Kumar is the unrivalled Trash King of Bollywood these days, the small audience should have been no surprise.

Colossus of Nonsense
From the getgo, De Dana Dan misses no opportunity to lay bare its claim to fame as one of the lowpoints of Bollywood this year.

The grand get-rich plan of two desperate desis in Singapore Nitin (Akshay Kumar) and Ram (Sunil Shetty) rests on kidnapping the dog belonging to a rich and greedy businesswoman (Archana Puran Singh).

Oh, if you really want to know Nitin is the driver and Man Friday of the greedy businesswoman while Ram is driver for a courier service van.

Director Priyadarshan, who is also responsible for the moronic screenplay, then throws in a bewidering array of characters and side stories to the dog-kidnap tale in a clumsy, hopeless attempt at salvaging this junk.

You have Nitin’s sweetheart Anjali (Katrina Kaif); Ram’s girlfriend Manpreet (Sameera Reddy); a failed, crooked businessman Chaddha Sr (Paresh Rawal); a contract killer Murari (Johnny Lever); a Don (Asrani), a hooker (Neha Dhupia), a hyper-priapic weirdo (Shakti Kapoor) and more.

But in the complete absence of comic scenes or hilarious dialogs, the end result of this dismal ensemble is endless tedium for the audience.

Notwithstanding what you may have heard or read, none of the characters or their antics are funny in the least. Just unceasingly boring and tiresome.

Oh well, Rajpal Yadav as the waiter was a bit funny but then his character is too insignificant.

Why Singapore had to be the setting for this drivel is a mystery.

Key Villains
The principal villains of De Dan Dan are the incomprehensibly fatuous story and unendurable screenplay.

Then there’s the mediocre acting.

Sunil Shetty is the antithesis of acting. How this bozo managed to bag a role in this movie is a question that can only be answered by producer Sunil Lulla.

Akshay Kumar is tolerable but the shoddy script leaves no room for any chance of entertainment.

Both Sameera Reddy and Katrina Kaif are pitiful and leave no mark whatsoever.

A most unimpressive abomination, Sameera Reddy with her horrid acting skills, her weird costume and stupid hairstyle seemed like a modern-day Lady Macbeth out to wreak her machinations on the audience.

Sheer Cacophony
As for the so-called music in the film, to spend any time on that cacophony in De Dana Dan would be to waste your time and ours.

There’s not one redeeming thing in this repellent farce of a movie.

Awful Finale
If the first 2 hours of De Dana Dan was awfully boring, the last 40 minutes was unendurable nonsense. Particularly after the suitcase-bomb blasts and a huge wave of water rushes into the hotel.

What was the necessity to drag that nonsense for 15 minutes?

They say that Kerala, the state De Dana Dan director Priyadarshan hails from, has 100% literacy. This retard Priyadarshan must surely be an exception.

Priyadarshan, Caput tuum in ano es (readers, if Latin is all Greek to you, the expression means you have your head up your ass).

Not Worth Watching
Guys, think not for a moment.

De Dana Dan begs you to show it the middle finger.

The Film The Blind Side Is the Sport Movie .
And I don’t mean entertainment for humors sake. There is little to laugh about in Titanic but if your characters are strong enough and the facts pure enough then there is an element of enjoyment even if not in the true definition of the word. You benefit from watching it even if you know their situation is dire. The Blind Side never has to apologize for its actions. It tells the story with a beauty and intelligence that is mentally engaging as well as entertaining. That is a good balance.

The Blind Side is the true story of a Memphis family who go out of their way to help out a young, impoverished student. The last thing on their mind was a book deal, movie rights, NFL drafts and red carpet premiers. They simply saw a need and did something about it. Period. Michael Oher (Quinton Aaron) was a homeless teen struggling in school and with no clear hope for the future. Sean and Leigh Anne Touhy (Tim McGraw/Sandra Bullock) are the prominent family who took him in and gave him a place to sleep for the night. The one night turned in to many and before long they were sowing into this young man an opportunity to achieve things in life that none of them imagined. By the way, Oher is now a rookie for the Baltimore Ravens and playing in the NFL. Not a bad outcome for a guy most had turned their backs on as a young boy.

When I watched the trailer I was concerned that Bullock was playing her character to extremes. A blonde Bullock was one thing but this powerhouse with a southern drawl was too much. Then I met the real Leigh Ann Touhy and realized that Sandra was almost down playing her intensity and passion. It is safe to say that the characters in this film make it work as much as the story itself. They are likeable and over the top and too good to be true. Leigh Ann says the things we want to. Her family, though affluent, are still typical people. This makes for a lot of humor to balance out the dramatic elements of the film. To label this just another feel good story or an underdog sports documentary would be a travesty. If it where fiction it would still be entertaining and heart warming. The fact that it is true makes it outstanding and powerfully moving.

The Blind Side is rated PG-13 for one scene involving brief violence, drug and sexual references. This is a must see film for your family this Holiday season. Take out the one very brief scene that is so important in showing the life Oher came from and you have a film that is very safe, spiritual and thought provoking. I believe all young people need to see this movie with their families and then talk about what they can do in their own neighborhood and schools to reach out to someone in need. Sure, the Touhy situation is rare and we can’t all go to the extremes they did. But we can all do something and I dare you to walk away from this movie denying that fact. I give it 4.5 out of 5 rookies of the year. In this season of being thankful it is a good reminder to share what we have with others. So says Matt Mungle.

As an NFL writer for the past ten years, Michael Oher’s remarkable story is not new to me. I was introduced via Michael Lewis’ 2006 book The Blind Side. It was a fascinating account of how the position of left tackle in the National Football League has evolved into one of its most important and highest-paying jobs. After all, the left tackle’s role is to protect the “blind side” of the highest-paid player on the team—the quarterback. The focus of the book is offensive line prodigy Michael Oher, a big, homeless ghetto kid from Memphis, taken in by a rich white family and a Christian high school.

n the new Warner Brothers film by the same name (in theaters Friday, Nov. 20), teenager Michael Oher (Quinton Aaron) is surviving on his own—virtually homeless—when he is spotted on the street by Leigh Anne Tuohy (Sandra Bullock, who looks better than ever). Learning that the young man is one of her daughter’s classmates, Leigh Anne insists that Michael (aka “Big Mike”)—wearing shorts and a t-shirt in the dead of winter—come out of the cold. Without a moment’s hesitation, she invites him to stay at the Tuohy home for the night. What starts out as a gesture of kindness turns into something more as Michael becomes part of the Tuohy family despite the differences in their backgrounds.

Living in his new environment, Michael faces a completely different set of challenges to overcome. And as the family helps Michael fulfill his potential, both on and off the football field, his presence in the Tuohys’ lives leads them to some insightful self-discoveries of their own.

I saw a screening of The Blind Side this past week. And while I don’t envision any Academy Award nominations, it is a very solid movie that every member of the family should see—a heart-warming, feel-good film that really shows the spirit of selfless giving and care that each of us can learn from. Maybe we won’t take matters to the extreme that Leigh Anne Tuohy did (or maybe we will), but we see the difference that can be made in another person’s life if we would take the time to open our eyes and get involved.

While at times a little corny and unbelievable (I can’t accept that Michael’s coach really answers his cell phone on the sideline or that Mrs. Tuohy pretty much takes over a team practice), The Blind Side has enough beauty in its message to accept the story as pretty much the way it happened. And even if it didn’t, we’re left kind of hoping that it did. The inevitable moments of turmoil do predictably appear, but not without a belief that things will get better. Quickly.

The Blind Side’ movie gets pretty good reviews from top critics. Warner Bros. Pictures released it’s new true life drama movie, “The Blind Side,” today,and the reviews are in. They look pretty good,getting mostly 4 star ratings across the board. While having just a few 3 star ratings.

Ann Hornaday from the Washington Post gave it 4 stars. She said, ” Grounded in the direct, disarming truth of their experience, the movie has a straightforward lack of cheap sentiment that saves it from being either too maudlin or saccharine-sweet.”

Joe Leydon from Variety gave it another 4 stars. He stated, “Uplifting and entertaining feel-good, fact-based sports drama.”

James Berardinelli also gave it 4 stars,stating, ” In a head-to-head comparison, one would be hard-pressed not to declare that “Precious” is the better film – it makes fewer compromises and doesn’t shy from showing the true ugliness only hinted at in this movie, but The Blind Side is more accessible. It’s easier to digest. In the end, both films tell stories of triumph over adversity – a category of drama that uplifts while offering a dollop of social commentary.”

Betsy Sharkey of the Los Angeles Times gave it 4 stars. She said, “Wisely, Hancock has given the film as much humor as heart.”

Michael Rechtshaffen over at “The Hollywood Reporter” gave it 4 stars. He said, “Bullock is an irrepressible hoot in writer-director John Lee Hancock’s otherwise thoroughly conventional take on Michael Lewis’ fact-based book “The Blind Side: Evolution of a Game.”

USA Today’s Claudia Puig gave it 4 stars. She stated, “Has strong performances and stirring football scenes.”

Wesley Morris of the Boston Globe rated it 4 stars. He said, ” Bullock’s levelheaded acting frequently saves the movie from emotional garishness.”

A.O. Scott from The New York Times gave it 3 stars. He said , “The film, not unsurprisingly for a holiday- (and football-) season release from a major Hollywood studio, plays this story straight down the middle, shedding nuance and complication in favor of maximum uplift.”

Mick LaSalle from the San Francisco Chronicle gave it 3 stars. He said, ” Never dull, but it’s rarely more than gently entertaining.”

Owen Gleiberman of Entertainment Weekly gave it a 3 star rating. He stated, ” A feel-good movie that never stops feeling good. Edward doesn't care so much about that, but he is concerned when his brother Jasper goes vampire wacko at Bella's tiny papercut, and before you can get used to the flashy new topaz contact lenses that Pattinson is sporting this time, Edward and his Cullen clan are out of Forks, Washington.

And that's when things really get going in New Moon, a follow-up to Twilight that manages both to stay true to the nature of the first film and also improve on it a bit. Director Chris Weitz sticks with the moody Pacific Northwest scenery and intense romance but also infuses a zippy, poppier sensibility, meaning the two-plus hours move along swiftly and with more humor than the first film. Plus there's a whole lot more going on here, dealing with first heartbreak and a potential new romance and the villains from the first movie, and oh yeah, that pack of handsome shirtless guys? They're werewolves.

Those who were horrified by Twilight's tweaking of vampire mythology won't quite know what to do with the wolfpack, introduced to Bella when her BFF Jacob (Taylor Lautner) discovers that, as a member of the Native American Quileute tribe, he turns into a hairy snarling beast whenever he gets angry. Jacob is the proverbial shoulder for Bella to cry on when Edward skips town, and even though Bella takes to putting her life in danger constantly for a glimpse of Edward's spirit to warn her away (no, I don't get it either), she's clearly warming up to Jacob and his rock-hard pecs as well. Jacob and his wolfy brethren-- none of whom ever wear shirts-- protect Bella from leftover evil vampire Victoria (Rachelle Lafevre), who appears so briefly hear that she'll clearly be exacting her revenge in the next movie. But when Edward mistakenly gets word that Bella has died, it's time to shrug off her hairy new friends and rush off to Italy, where there are some red-eyed vampire royals-- among them Michael Sheen and Dakota Fanning--anxious to get to know her.

Though it's what has earned the book series millions of fans, the romance scenes are the worst part of New Moon-- Pattinson and Stewart recite their lines to each other with dead expressions, and all the crazy, lusty energy of the first film has been replaced with a sense that the two can't wait to get away from each other. Luckily, they do, and Stewart and Lautner establish a much more relaxed, funnier rapport, albeit one that's so friendly you can't really believe Jacob as a romantic threat. Just as in the first film, the scenes with Bella's human high school friends-- including a sharp Anna Kendrick-- are highlights, and Billy Burke returns as Bella's warm and caring father, though perhaps a guy who should pay more attention and realize that his daughter is hanging out with the undead.

Really, all of the side characters are interesting and well-cast-- the problem is that we're stuck with draggy Bella at the center of it all. Though Stewart has improved a little since the first film, relying less on stammering and flipping her hair, she's still playing the most passive heroine in the history of time. Whether she's being dumped by the love of her life or witnessing a werewolf transformation, Bella never seems remotely interested in her surroundings, and not once does she take action to protect herself or those around her. Time after time one of Bella's supernatural friends jumps in to rescue her from some new threat. She's not just a boring heroine, but given her popularity among women of all ages, an actual setback for feminism.

Pattinson, in his brief scenes, matches Stewart in his lack of interest in the surroundings, which leaves Lautner to flash his smile, crack a joke, and steal a million teenage hearts. The film's best performance, though, goes to Fanning, who in about five lines and a dozen stony glares makes more of an impact than anyone else in the two films total. While Bella mopes around like a wet noodle, Fanning's Jane is a female character who actually bothers to do-- good or bad, we don't care, so long as it's interesting.

Handling the material with less instinct than Catherine Hardwicke, Weitz still makes the wise choice of employing a lot of moody pop music and montages to move things along, and his visual style is a massive improvement-- the sparkling skin of the vampires still isn't great, but at least it's not laughable now. The same can't be said for many elements of the movie-- the constantly shirtless werewolves, Jacob's insistence that being a wolf "isn't a lifestyle choice"-- but New Moon avoids slipping into self-parody by being a little less serious as well. It's impossible to have a truly light touch with the material-- Stephenie Meyer's writing prevents that entirely-- but Weitz's efforts result in a movie that's a little less insular and self-involved, though in the end, still probably one only the true fans could love.

Assuming the audience has nothing better to do, The Twilight Saga: New Moon struggles to tell its tiny tale over the course of two hours and ten minutes as a world inhabited by vampires, werewolves and who knows what else is pushed to the side in an effort to watch as a girl is prepared to throw her life away following her vampire lover's departure. To think they could get this film this wrong after the halfhearted first installment is something of an achievement.

Kristen Stewart returns as Bella as she pines for her golden-eye, ice cold vampire boyfriend Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson). Unfortunately the Cullen clan has to leave town as their immortal aging process has become something of an alarm to the small town folk of Forks, Washington and Edward won't be sticking around. You know, for Bella's sake.

The decision results in Bella turning her attention toward Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner), the mysterious Native American boy with the overnight buff physique and habit of stripping down to his jean shorts and running off into the forest with his boys. This, of course, is due to the fact he's a vampire-hating werewolf, but these are just minor details in the life of Bella and passed off as everyday occurrences. She's cool with weird stuff as one of the other werewolves says.

These two previous paragraphs take up approximately the first 90 minutes of New Moon — along with briefly reintroducing a couple of loose ends from the first film to add to the running time — before things can shift to Italy, and finally get interesting for 15 minutes or so. No joke.

I'm sorry to say this, but New Moon is a bore. The characters don't seem interested in what's going on and director Chris Weitz seems intent on making sure the audience feels the same way. When Bella isn't screaming in her sleep (over and over again, night after night) we are privileged enough to stare as she sits in a chair and does nothing as the months pass by. Months! And it feels like it.

If looked at as an exercise in patience, New Moon is a gem, but otherwise you are going to be nodding off fairly early. The presumed "love story" gets so bogged down in redundancy and storytelling miscues we never once care for any part of it, especially considering it is all so telegraphed there is hardly a mystery as to how it will all come to an end.

This isn't to say New Moon hasn't improved at all where Twilight failed. The action is a vast improvement. There's an impressive forest chase sequence that brings back Rachelle Lefevre as the vampire Victoria, and the moments in Italy where we are introduced to the vampire coven known as the Volturi are easily the film's stand out sequences. However, if you noticed the likes of Dakota Fanning and Michael Sheen as part of the cast don't expect too much as Fanning gets about five words in and Sheen, while impressive as Volturi leader Aro, isn't given nearly enough time to shine.

The effects are improved, but the same stunted performances by the disinterested Stewart, the waxy bore that is Pattinson and the amateurish turn by Lautner are all still present. Even Billy Burke playing Bella's father, the lone standout from the first film, is turned into a stiff. The life was sucked out of New Moon either by the lack of story or by the inability of Weitz to tap into any kind of real energy. However, to be fair, the story is so weak it didn't stand much of a chance and certainly not for more than two hours.

Fans of Stephenie Meyer's best-selling teen-vampire franchise were tolerant of the first film, and some may have legitimately enjoyed it, but I can't help but wonder how long they can remain interested if the filmed adaptations continue to disappoint.

Every fifth or sixth word in my notes on The Twilight Saga: New Moon is ‘mope’. If there’s a more listless, disengaged piece of film this year I hope I don’t have to suffer it. (Actually, there is, and I did right after writing this. The guys’ flipside to New Moon: Ninja Assassin.) This second Twilight film is not a dreamy, thorny gothic romance; it is a stereotypical, unimaginative caricature of depressed teens expanded into 120 minutes. By comparison, Catherine Hardwicke’s creaky first film looks like a wise and knowing glimpse into youthful distraction and obsession.

There’s another thread that dominates my notes on New Moon, and which is really the crux of why the movie is so lousy: ‘heroine’ Bella (Kristen Stewart), who in this chapter is reduced to sub-character statues. She’s less substantial than tissue paper, but is featured in nearly every scene. Bella is listless and empty, devoid of any notable characteristic. She has no opinions and nothing interesting to say; her only characteristic is that she wants. But the object of her desire, the vampire Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson, pale and grim), is equally as insubstantial. They’d make a perfect pair, if you were looking for a couple to fill out the deep background of a better film.

We open a short time after the events of the first film. Bella has been generally accepted into the ranks of the vampiric Cullen family. But her status as a human — that is, potential food — is underlined when an innocent paper cut leads to a violent family showdown. It’s one thing when your new girlfriend doesn’t fit in with the fam; quite another when she’d fit all too well on the dinner menu. There’s also the lingering spectre of rival vampire Victoria (the briefly-seen Rachelle Lefevre, to be replaced in the next movie by Bryce Dallas Howard) who, having been defeated in the last film, earnestly want to get her fangs into Bella.

So the Cullens, not to put too fine a point on it, fuck right off. Edward brushes off Bella in the way a confused teenage kid might (ironically making his action one of the few recognizable human moments in the story) and she’s left to mope around for months. Finally her eye lands on the newly beefed up Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner), who hits werewolf puberty just as he and Bella are about to really hook up. Their friendship develops as she uses him to take her mind off Edward; she’s playing him along, and he’s too smitten to see it.

It’s a classic romantic setup, but new director Chris Weitz doesn’t get it. He knows that Bella and Edward represent grand romance to a legion of teens, so he smashes them together in the frame. But there’s no spark. He knows that Bella is meant to be distracted and wooed by werewolf Jacob, so he shoots Jake and his wolfpack brothers with their shirts off and pecs glistening, seemingly unaware of how laughable the crew is. Nothing genuine passes between any of the characters; you could mistake the film for a feature-length parody of the Twilight phenomena if you didn’t already know better.

Melissa Rosenberg wrote the script. She’s already a Twilight vet, having scripted the first film, and has plenty of experience with obsession thanks to her day job on Dexter. I’m told that her script is very much a direct adaptation of the novel, so I’m left pinning the blame for this snoozefest on Weitz’s perfunctory direction. At most, perhaps Rosenberg has to answer a seemingly truncated climactic sequence where Edward tries to end his life at the hands of the Volturi, a clan of bloodsucker royalty. (He basically attempts the vampiric version of suicide by cop.)

The craft in Catherine Hardwicke’s effort was definitely more rickety than what’s on display here; from any technical perspective this is a far more competent film. (Which generally means: more traditional, which is not necessarily better by any means.) OK, the effects here are better, thanks perhaps to extra dollars in the budget that were spent on shirts for the entire cast in the last movie. But when it came to the feel, Hardwicke got it and Weitz doesn’t. In Twilight, scenes between Bella and her father were touching, and Bella’s alienation was easy to understand. It gave her a reason to be drawn to Edward Cullen. In New Moon, there’s no reason at all.

Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson both struggle against the content vacuum that sucks the life out of the movie, but neither is even vaguely strong enough to put up the necessary fight. As Jacob, Taylor Lautner is marginally better, but he also gets the best material; he’s the only active, non-depressed character of the core trio. Michael Sheen and Dakota Fanning offer a little juice as Volturi elders, Sheen even channeling a bit of Christoph Waltz energy, but it’s a futile effort. So too with Anna Kendrick, who genuinely earns a laugh or two. But after seeing her sparkle in Up in the Air this is like catching her sneaking in a bored weekend of community theatre.

Stephenie Meyer's Twilight saga continues with this darker and even mopier chapter. The relational knots of emo heroes and dreamy hunks are making it start to feel rather soapy. It may not be as sharp as Catherine Hardwick's Twilight, but it'll keep fans swooning.

Just as Bella (Stewart) turns 18 and begins her senior year in high school, her beloved Edward (Pattinson) decides he has to leave town for her safety. In a deep funk, she eventually turns to neighbour Jacob (Lautner) for company, but their friendship takes a twist when he starts getting hunky and tetchy and hanging out with gang-leader Sam (Spencer). But it's not steroids; the gang members are actually werewolves, locked in mortal combat with vampires. And she needs (and wants) to keep both Edward and Jacob in her life.

The plot echoes Romeo & Juliet (and not just because they're studying the play in school), which adds tension to the otherwise dreary events. The character detail and action-oriented sideroads from the first film are actually more integral here so, despite the long running time, the story has more momentum.
That said, it's still told from the perspective of a moody adolescent.

Even more than the first film, this is a movie for teen girls who feel weak at the knees over the idea of romance with one of these idealised boyfriend types: lovers and friends. The handsome cast members generate considerable internal angst as batting eyelashes face off against rippling abs. There's also much gazing off-screen and mumbled dialog, so it's a welcome change when a grown-up arrives to steal a scene. Sheen is especially good as the leader of the uber-vampire Vulpari, as is Fanning as his vile sidekick. We should get much more of them in the next two films.

Meanwhile, some nasty touches add texture alongside all the longing and yearning. Sudden moments of violence continually catch us by surprise, adding to the drama, as do hints about both things that have happened and things still to come. The only missteps are the jerky plotting and the cartoonish wolf effects; otherwise the filmmaking is lush and forebodingly beautiful, especially as it portrays woods that are lovely, dark and deep. And everything looks so cool it almost hurts.

Rensil has chosen the burning issue of terrorism for his debut film. Although the movie is being compared to Fanna (Amir Khan, Kajol) and NewYork (Neil Nitin Mukesh,John Abraham) but there is no similarity. Kurbaan is one of those movies that are not just meant to entertain but in fact they leave an enlightening impact on the spectators. Having said this movie deserves a double thumb up.

Avantika (Kareena Kapoor) is a University teacher in Delhi who has retuned from US to take care of her Dad who has recently suffered a heart attack. During this time she meets Ehsaan (Saif Ali Khan) another professor and hence their love story begins. Few months down the road Avantika gets a call from her University in Delhi calling her back to work. When she tells Ehsaan he agrees to go with her but wants to get married before they leave.

Soon after their marriage they move to NY to start a new life. They are invited for dinner by their Muslim neighbors one day and that’s when the real story begins. Kurbaan is a love story between Saif and Kareena and the story of Islamic terrorists. There are some intimate scenes between the love birds as much touted about on the media. The high point of the movie is its thirty five minute climax. To sum up the Kurbaan movie review I’ll just say its one for the watcher.

Of late, we have been witnessing too many movies that have global terrorism as their background - Fanaa, Aamir, A Wednesday, Khuda Ke Liye, and New York. And ‘Kurbaan’ is another movie in the same league. In fact, more often than not, it seems to remind us of New York, what with an urbane, educated and seemingly-genteel fellow turning out to be a terrorist, nick of the time rescues, and emotional melodrama at the end. At times, it is reminiscent of Khuda Ke Liye as well. Still, somewhere, it manages to touch your heart and leave an impression.

‘Kurbaan’ starts off as a love story that though essential to the plot, seems to take too much of time. From there, it moves forward to a social theme and finally has the thrill catching you by surprise. The good part of the movie is that once the terrorism angle comes to the fore, the love story is given a backseat and relegated to the background. This is where the serious issue of global terrorism is highlighted, but without being preachy. In fact, ‘Kurbaan’ has a neutral take on terrorism, neither glorifying it, nor condemning it. Rather, it just presents the situation as it is and lets the viewers decide for themselves.

Almost through its run, ‘Kurbaan’ maintains a fast pace, ensuring that you do not get to stifle even a single yawn. The story is mostly credible and coherent, except for a few instances, while the screenplay is crisp, effective and to the point. The twists and turns in the movie are rightly placed and well executed, not even once taking the film away from its main theme. Niranjan Iyengar and Anurag Kashyap have penned ‘just-perfect’ dialogues for the film, which do not stretch on endlessly in the emotional scenes, yet manage to make an impact. The background score is effective and the music soulful.

There are a few loose ends in ‘Kurbaan’, like Vivek Oberoi dealing with the terrorists alone, without involving the cops; his easy entry into the terrorist cell; a ruthless terrorist being so gentle at home; a suicide bomber being moved by an emotional speech; and so on. Still, they are not so much so as to render the film ineffective. In terms of performances, Saif Ali Khan plays his part with utmost conviction, while Kareena Kapoor got a chance to bring out her best after a long time. Vivek Oberoi is ‘fab’ and shines in most of the portions. As for Om Puri and Kirron Kher, the performance was worth applauding. Not a bad weekend watch, I would say!

‘Kurbaan’ rotates around the life of Avantika (Kareena Kapoor). Avantika is a Psychology Professor in New York, who returns to India owing to the failing health of her father. She manages to get a job at the prestigious Delhi University. Here she meets Ehsaan Khan (Saif Ali Khan), who is working as a substitute teacher in the same University. As expected, both of them fall in love with each other and eventually get married as well. Avantika’s father initially takes a stand against the marriage, since Ehsaan is a Muslim. However, he agrees later on and blesses the new-weds.

Things are going well, until the couple flies to New York, to start a new life. It does not take long for Avantika to see that she had fallen into a trap. Everything seems to be well planned and decisively moved by Ehsaan. He dislikes the houses that Avantika selects for them and the one that he chooses looks creepy. Avantika finds her new surrounding extremely conservative. All the people close to their house are highly obliging to Nasreen and her husband, Bhaijaan. They have their own code of conduct and everyone seems to abide by them. Avantika smells something wrong in the whole affair.

Avantika soon realizes that her husband is a dangerous terrorist, who has used her for his own purpose. Ehsaan also keeps her under house. She eventually finds out that he is planning to hijack a flight. Vivek Oberoi, in the role of a journalist, is also a passenger in the same flight. The climax of the movie brings the struggle of Kareena and Vivek, against Saif. Will they be successful in their fight against Ehsaan? The movie sounds interesting and is very much different from the conventional Karan Johar movies. Let us see how the audience reacts to this one

Vaigai by debutant R Sundarapandy is a very good first effort in Tamil Cinema by the director. The story inspired by a real life incident has nothing new to offer in terms of the story line but the director’s interesting narration of the subject has made the movie a watchable one.

Bala is the son of the rich Sai Kumar. He falls in love with Vishaka who is the daughter of the village postman Thalaivasal Vijay. The love is opposed by the rich father and the lovers decide to take their life by consuming poison and depart on train in opposite directions. Both survive without the knowledge that the other has survived. Bala is sent to Chennai to be with a uncle and Vishaka returns to the village in search of Bala and this leads to the tragic climax of the movie.

Prem (Shashank) is in college. He becomes friendly with Pavithra (Vidisha) who sis also studying in the same college. They become good friends and the hero teaches the heroine computers. The heroine come from a rich family and naturally has all the qualities of a spoilt rich girl. Her father and mother are socialites and spend all their time either at business or kitty parties and other activities.

The hero mistakes the heroine’s friendship as love only to be rebuked. However as fate would have it, they succumb to temptation and unite on a rainy night. The heroine becomes pregnant and without heeding the hero’s pleadings aborts the fetus. This anger Prem and he leaves her.

Prem becomes a successful businessman. A journalist who is doing an assignment on lovers meets Prem and learns about his story. The journalist also meets Pavithra and comes to know that they both were the lovers she came to know through her assignment.

Pavithra’s efforts to meet Prem fail. Prem meanwhile decides to hire a womb so that he can become a father and also please his mother. He becomes the father of a baby boy. The hero later realizes that the woman who gave her womb on hire and bore her child is none other than Pavithra. She has done this to atone for her sin in aborting the fetus earlier. With the misunderstandings gone, the film ends on a happy note
The film succeeds in driving home the point about having good character and values in society. The present day generation and the casual affairs among the youth are captured accurately. The lead actors give a good performance. The film is average but may pick up slowly. The debut director Hemanth Puvvada has done a fairly good job. Can be watched once .

The essence in love is what makes him realize the value of life. The film has Ajay doing the lead role while Ramya Nambeesan, Madhulika and Ramya are the leading ladies.

It is known news that villain Ajay has now changed tracks and he has been working his way to prove his mettle as a hero. Now, his next venture ‘Saarai Veerraju’ is currently in the making and the news is that the movie is all set to hit the screens in the month of November. Ajay is pairing up with Ramya Nambeesan in this one and it is being directed by D S Kannan who is making his debut. The music for the film is composed by Sri Sai.

Popular villain Ajay turned hero with the recently released film ‘Aa Okkadu’. The film won good reviews though, could not run in theaters for long. Now, Ajay’s 2nd film ‘Saarayi Veerraju’ is getting ready for release in October. It is a film with novel concept with hero’s characterization mixed with different shades like brave, sarcasm, comedy and sensitiveness. Debutant director DS Kannan, who worked with Rajamouli in the past, is said to be shaping the film in an exceptional way. Major part of film shooting was held at Narasipatnam with few local artists and shooting part is almost complete. “Raavi Sastry’s six liquor based stories have inspired me to venture into ‘Saarai Veerraju’. One could find the affluent literary of Raavi Sastry, and myths of Telugu culture in this film”, says director Kannan. Music is composed by Sri Sai and the audio launch is likely to take place sometime in September. Malayalam actress Ramya Nambisan is playing the main female lead. From the amount he received from voluntary retirement, he bought a plot for building a resort. Nearer to his new plot was the house of Gulf Chandi (Jagathy Sreekumar). Chandi has no children and he loved his car like his own child. After buying the plot Thulaseedaran built compound wall for the property. This wall blocked the entry to Chandi’s house. Due to this issue Thulasi and Chandi became enemies.

When the resort’s work was in progress the workers got the remains of an old ship. The archeology department notified this place heritage. As he knew his effort to build a resort in that property will become futile, he decided to sell the plot. He approached Chandi for the purpose.

Kappal Muthalali’ is said to be comedy movie, directed by the comedy specialist Thaha. All the lead roles in this movie are played by newcomers. The film will be produced by Rameez Raja and Mummy Century under the banner Century Vision. Thaha is a successful director, since his debut and very good at slapstick comedies. This film will also be a successful one like his other movies. Sarayu, a degree student from Eranakulam has made an excellent performance, and could not be told as a debutant. Thus it is fortunate that she got a lead role in this movie. Ramesh Pisharodi will play the hero, who debuted in the movie ‘Positive’. He is good at comedy roles which he had already proved in his previous movie. The movie is carried with hilarious comedy, with Mukesh, Jagathy, Thilakan, Jagadeesh, Salim Kumar, Suraj, Mamu Koya, Kaviyoor Ponnamma and many others.

The director who specialises in making Slapstick comedies Thaha is back to business with the new movie titled as ‘Kappal Muthalali’. Kurradu Review

Varun Sandesh has been on top ever since his Happy Days. His Kotha Bangaru Lokam also had set a new record and thus he became a youth icon. He came up with Kurradu and obviously the expectations will be above the plane. Let us see how this worked.

Story:
Varun (Varun Sandesh) is a young boy who loves owning a sports bike. But his below middle class family background turns a barricade to fulfill his dream. His poor father (Tanikella Bharani) worries about his day-dreaming and irresponsible son. But after a dramatic incident his father gives him Rs 70000 to purchase bike out of his all life time savings. Varun buys a bike and enjoys. He finds a girl Hema (NehaSharma) and both fall in love. But that bike results in turbulence in Varun’s life. What is that? That has to be seen on big screen.

Performances:
Varun Sandesh looked lean and lanky and he didn’t suit for the energy levels required for the role. He needs to upgrade his dialogue delivery pattern especially while portraying the roles of this kind.

Neha Sharma looked good with naughty smile and big eyes. But she hasn’t upgraded in the matter of performance. Many of her expressions sounded artificial and sometimes lagging in dialogue.

Tanikella Bharani is ok as middle class father while Pragathi is perfect in mother role. Ravi Shankar, the popular dubbing artiste played the lead villain role in fitting manner.

Others are ok.

Technically, the movie has no big thing to discuss about. The story sounds not so great as already ‘Ride’ has come on screen with similar theme.

Analysis:
It’s a different version of ‘Ride’. It is also inspired from the Tamil movie ‘Polladavan’. But Pollavadan has already inspired Ride. While Ride has two heroes where one is arrogant and other is the one with poor background, here the hero in Kurradu possessess both in him. The bike forms common element both in Ride and Kurradu.
On a whole, the movie has no tempo that keeps audience fix on to seats with interest. First half is ok while second half seems to have run with no punch and required emotion.

The movie may not appeal in the way it’s expected.

Bottom Line: It can be watched only to kill time if you feel that’s Hobson’s

Very rarely all good things combine together. ‘Devaru Kotta Thangi’ an emotional, sacrifice saga of brother and sister is one such produced, directed and distributed by veteran director Om Saiprakash. The film is protracted, the contents are enough to draw the mass audience, the fans of Shivarajakumar will be having a respite the actresses Meera Jasmine and Monica not only looks good but performed very well. The character artists have given admirable support, there are very lovely songs, and the comedy is quite absorbing, the technology pressed for this film - the graphics is in high standards. What else the rural people require to watch this film? Everything is there rather in abundance!

Orphans Shivu (Shivarajakumar) and his sister Lakshmi (Meera Jasmine) are standing example of siblings. Each one is sacrificing and immensely loving in relation. Shivu works as a servant in the family of Zamindar of 18 villages (played by Avinash). He is very close to the family and all good things happen only from him. Zamindar considers him as a bright star of the family. In the same family where Shivu works as servant his sister Lakshmi comes as daughter in law. Thanks to destiny this offer is accepted by Zaminar and his wife but not the six other members in the family. Shivu and Lakshmi in the house of Zamindar finds insult one after the other. Finally Lakshmi works out a scheme to send her brother out from the house. Now it is the turn of vicious minds in the Zamindar family to kick out Lakshmi when she becomes a pregnant. The fury mounts up for Lakshmi and she is made to believe she has to sacrifice her life for stopping the flood and the life of her brother. On the other hand Lakshmi’s brother Shivu offers prayers (even injuring himself) for the good of Lakshmi. In the heavy floods pregnant Lakshmi decide to end her life. The vicious minds of Zamindar family in fact face threat to life when they decide to elope from the village. Finally it is all happy ending from Shivu’s courage.

Another sterling performance from hat trick hero Shivarajakumar! He has variety in this film and struggled hard. He is emotionally the best. Meera Jasmine is a treat to watch as sister. She has given very good expressions understanding her role very well. Monica as the naughty heroine to Shivarajakumar sizzles from village belle role.

Among the characters artists Avinash has that grit, lively appearance as Zamindar of a family. Hema Chaudhary, Rekha, Sangeetha are apt in their roles. Sadhu Kokila and Lakshmi Devi combination in the comedy track is a relief.

Hamsalekha and Giri in the music and cinematography department earn good applause. The Ugadi song mixed with Kannada language is top of all. The Nagarapanchami festival song is story based song rich in value and tradition. The opening and ending of the cinema with floods is very well captured.

OM Sai Prakash's Kannada film Devaru Kotta Thangi is nothing but a rehash of his earlier films. The only thing that is new in the story which is a Dutch fable about a small boy saving his village from impending disaster.

The essence of the Kannada folklore Keregehaara where an expectant mother sacrifices her life to save the village from being marooned has also been used in the climax sequence. .

Saigaru has specialized in making tearjerker dramas in the past and some of them are hugely successful, like Thavarige Baa Thangi and Anna Thangi. The success of these two films have made Sai Prakash to repeat the same formula in all his films!

In that way what separates Devaru Kotta Thangi from his other movies is his effective use of high voltage technology. Otherwise the film remains the same old cliched formula.

The story goes like this: Shivu, who is attached to his younger sister Lakshmi, works as a labourer in a rich man's house. Shivu loves Gowri but is agreeable to marry her only after Lakshmi gets married.

Meanwhile, Lakshmi saves the rich man's son and gets married to him later. This marriage is much liked by the elders in the family but is resented by the sons and the daughters-in-law who then hatch a plan to discredit Shivu and his sister. They even plan to kill Lakshmi who is expecting a baby. What happens next make up the rest of the movie.

The first half of the film almost looks like a docudrama of the well known festivals like Nagarapanchami, Bheemana Amavasye and Ugadi.

Another disturbing point is Sai Prakash's efforts to propagate regressive ideas through the film like the rich man's third son ties the Mangalasoothra on Meera Jasmine without seeking her permission or that of her brother. Does Sai Prakash think that women have little choice about marriage?

The positive elements are the graphics especially the flood scene. The climax song sequence and the festivities also stand out.

Shivaraj Kumar and Meera Jasmine have shown good chemistry on screen as a loving brother and sister. Both have tried to salvage this film by their genuine performances. All the other artists have carried off their respective roles with the same elan they had showed in several previous films of Sai Prakash.

Giri's camera work is another saving grace. Hamsalekha's music and lyrics suit the mood of the film.

The movie could have been better but for the cliched formulaic story, regressive posturing and dragging narration.

Music Review

Once again a neat soil smell family movie by Sai Prakash.

As usual Shivanna stands out in his performance ( I dont know how many times I have been telling this from almost 10 years by now) - He is so ease at what ever scene you give , he is one of the most flexible actor of KFI ever produced. :lol:

Coming back to the movie - Good to see Sai Prakash using such folkish kannada stories and making movie out of it that to in this modern era, that shows his confidence in human relationships . We had this subject of KERGHE HAARA in our school days and this movie is based on same concept.
What an amazing climax - it is simply superb and of high standards.
Hamsalekha has done superb job once again in songs and BGM [8)] [8)]

Even saadhu's comedy every now and then adds to the pace of the movie.

Meera jasmine has given very very controlled performance and monica has tried her best to fit the role and has succeded in that. :c

First off takes of fully after some 20 mins and later the movie goes at very good speed til the end.

The songs NANNA TANGI MADO HABBA makes you very emotional - atleast for me.
Even the other songs like EE Loka and Nanna nettighe botita are good.

Over all a neat family movie with full of soil smell.

Director Shashikanth has finally come out with his debut directorial venture IPC Section 300, which features Devraj, Vijayaraghavendra and Priyanka in the leads. It could have been a wonderful thriller in Kannada, if he had chopped off unwanted songs and comic sequences.

The director himself has written story, screenplay and dialogues for the movie IPC Section 300. His choice of the subject is unique and fresh, which was lacking in Kannada film for quite some time. The narration of the story is fast paced and the Shashi has got good grip over it. But several sequences related to Vijay’s love interest bore the audiences.

Mallikarjun (Devraj), who is an architect, shoots his wife Sheela in broad day light after he comes to know about her alleged relationship with a police officer (Srujan Lokesh). Then he surrenders to the police. But he refuses to take the help of a defense lawyer. How prosecutor Vijay, (Vijay Raghavendra) unravels murder mystery will form the rest of the story.

Devaraj has delivered brilliant performance. Vijayaraghavendra, who has shed lot of weight for the movie, looks wonderful in advocate's get up. Priyanka does not have much scope except adding spice to songs and comedy in the film. Bullet Prakash's comedy is good but its unnecessary use spoils the beauty of the movie. Suman Ranganath, Srujan and Yethiraj have done justice to their roles.

Krupakar's background music is another highlight of the movie and it helps the movie to touch the emotional chord.

Although a few songs and comic sequences drive away the interest of the audiences, IPC Section 300 has got enough number of enjoyable moment. Don't miss the movie.

Finally here comes a tautly made Kannada film with some brilliant moments. It is a treat for those who are looking for elegantly made thrillers. The film in question is IPC Section 300.

Despite its little flaws like an absurd humour track (Why can't the director chop off those sequences?) and unnecessary songs, IPC Section 300 is an enjoyable watch.

Debutant director Shashikanth, who earlier made ad and corporate films, comes out with a thriller which is quite unlike the run-of-the- mill flicks. The main factor that works for the film is the gripping narration which keeps you on the edge of your seats despite knowing the culprit behind the murder.

Another thing that separates IPC section 300 from other thrillers is that it touches an emotional chord too. You may even sympathise with the murderer while appreciating the brilliance of the investigating advocate. The intelligent handling of the idea from a debutant director surprises you.

The story revolves around Mallikarjun, a successful businessman shooting his infidel wife Sheela in broad day light in his house. He then surrenders to the police. The chief police investigator happens to be the person who had an illicit affair with Mallik's wife. Mallik who refuses to take the help of a defense lawyer denies his involvement in the crime and argues his own case. Vijay, a young public prosecutor finds this case intriguing and challenging. How he unravels the case in the face of the determined efforts of the murderer forms the backdrop of the story.

Besides wonderful performances from artists like Devaraj and Vijaya Raghavendra, it is Krupakar's fantastic background music that has taken the film to greater heights. Priyanka has been wasted in the film, though. She has been included only for adding some songs and comedy into the film.

The screenplay and dialogues by Shashikanth are very realistic. The film as a whole belongs to Shashikanth who has to be appreciated for the choice of the subject and for exercising total control over his narration.

IPC Section 300 is a treat for Kannada film fans.

Winner of five prizes at Sweden's academy awards, including best picture, "Everlasting Moments" is a rich, intensely human story that deals with the mysteries of creativity and love and the pain and joy of relationships.

It is a narrative film made the old-fashioned way, with all the sureness, understanding of life and command of the medium that come with more than 40 years of filmmaking. Plus something more.

Troell's films have, of course, come to this country before. He's had three nominated for the best foreign-language Oscar, and his 1971 Liv Ullmann-starring "The Emigrants" had five academy nominations, including best picture and director. But this time, the story he's chosen to tell has a personal connection, and that has made it if anything more deeply felt.

"Everlasting Moments," as its title hints, tells the story of a photographer, but a most unusual one, a Swedish working-class wife and mother at the turn of the last century who won a camera in a lottery and saw it ever so gradually transform her life.

The woman, Maria Larsson, is related to Troell's wife, who extensively interviewed Maria's daughter, Maja, who functions as the narrator in "Everlasting Moments." Though all Troell's films have the clear-eyed ability to divorce emotion from sentiment, there is the sense about this one that it meant something special to those who made it.

Perhaps because it means so much, Troell has made sure to lavish attention on the creation of time and place, on duplicating the ambience of Malmö, Sweden, in the years before, during and after the first World War. Serving as his own cinematographer (along with Mischa Gavrjusjov), Troell has come up with a whole series of images -- a huge zeppelin throwing a shadow over a neighborhood, a ghostly street car appearing out of a snowy night -- that are magical.

Though protagonist Maria (Maria Heiskanen) will eventually see the magic in her Contessa camera, won in a lottery soon after she meets future husband Sigfrid (Mikael Persbrandt), initially she is so caught up in her hard life with her spouse and their ever-increasing family that she more or less forgets she owns it.

That's because by the time we meet Sigfrid in 1907 he's already become a falling-down-drunk alcoholic who, to make things worse, has developed both a wandering eye and a taste for socialist politics that leads him and his fellow dockworkers to go out on strike.

The resulting fiscal crisis gets Maria to think of selling the camera, but when she nervously visits the local photography shop run by Mr. Pedersen (Jesper Christensen), he has other ideas. He shows Maria how to use the camera, gives her supplies and gets her involved in the gentle art of taking pictures. "It's our secret," he tells her conspiratorially, and so it for a time remains.

"Not everyone is endowed with the gift of seeing," a photographer confides to his promising student in "Everlasting Moments." But not only does Swedish director-writer-cinematographer Jan Troell possess this gift in overwhelming abundance, he has the talent to allow the viewer to see the souls of his characters and the salient details of the world they inhabit. Artistically on a plane with or near the vet filmmaker's best work, this period drama about a woman slowly discovering her metier is an artisanal creation par excellence that will be appreciated by discerning arthouse patrons worldwide.

Set across the period of about a decade beginning in 1907, this episodic, true-life-inspired story examines a cultural, political and artistic crossroads in intensely personal terms, specifically through a husband and wife whose many conflicts don't prevent them from producing seven children.

Aesthetically, "Everlasting Moments" could scarcely be more at odds with contemporary fashion; in a time when cinematic images are manipulated, degraded or altered, Troell's continued use of mostly natural light seems like a bracing rediscovery of a style that was fairly commonplace, and highly valued, in the '60s and '70s. Beholding Troell's exquisite images is like having your eyes washed, the better to behold moving pictures of uncorrupted purity and clarity. Troell's style has never changed, yet witnessing it again, or for the first time, has the power of a revelation.

Narrated judiciously by oldest daughter Maja (Callin Ohrvall), yarn is centered on her mother, Maria Larsson (Maria Heiskanen), a Finnish-born woman whose every thought is of her family. Posing a perennial problem, however, is her husband, Sigge (Mikael Persbrandt), a handsome, bull-like dockworker who's often drunk and abusive.

Happening upon a Contessa camera she won in a lottery but never used, Maria tries to pawn it when the dockworkers go on strike, but instead is shown how to use it by solicitous storeowner Sebastian Pedersen (Jesper Christensen). Slowly, and with no consciousness of "art," Maria discovers her natural bent for taking insightful, haunting pictures, helped along by lessons in the darkroom from Sebastian, who, due to reticence and perhaps their notable age difference, refrains from acting on his growing feelings for his protegee.

For Maria, daily life is always throwing things at her that keep her from her photography. When British scabs arrive to fill the jobs of the socialist-inspired strikers, Sigge, who's taken up with a barmaid, becomes identified with a fatal dynamiting of an English ship, ending his boat-loading days. But, much as she might like to be rid of Sigge, Maria can't bring herself to cut the cord.

At the midway point, action jumps ahead to 1914. When Sigge is called up for military service, Maria begins making money by taking group pictures and Christmas portraits; she even photographs the three Scandinavian kings when they meet to discuss policy, while Sebastian takes newsreel footage. Things only get worse again when Sigge returns, and to the very end, life has a way of giving with one hand and taking with the other.

Maria's gradual comprehension of her photographic gifts comes in direct opposition to her estrangement from her husband. Gently in the background are felt the larger movements of history, from the war to the socialist-capitalist showdowns to the continued emigration of Swedes to the United States.

Heiskanen carries the film as Maria, a modest woman who quietly absorbs most adversity except when it comes to her husband's drinking. It's not a showy role per se, and Heiskanen doesn't possess movie star-type radiance, but Maria's durability and embodiment of common-woman virtues draw one in. By contrast, Sigge is both a big man and a huge personality, thanks to Persbrandt's grand performance. One of Sweden's most popular stars, he will certainly boost his international profile with his outsized turn.

Production details transport the viewer back a century with utter credibility, and the camerawork makes every second an intense pleasure.

For the cinephile, discovering a new film by famed Swedish director Jan Troell (one of this year's Telluride tributees) is a lot like eating a perfectly made truffle after a lifetime of mass-produced candy bars. His latest effort, Everlasting Moments, was like that for me; it's that rare cinematic experience that you settle back, bite into, and then savor as the subtle richness of the film cleanses the palate and fills the soul.

Based on the real-life story of Troell's wife's grandmother, the film takes us through the life of Maria Larsson (Maria Heiskanen, in a remarkable performance), a belabored mother of a large brood in the early days of the 20th century who finds renewed passion and intellectual independence through a Contessa camera she wins in a lottery. The camera sits for many years unused until one day, Maria takes it into the shop of the local photographer, Sebastien Pederson (Jesper Christensen), to sell it to help pay the rent.

The kindly Pederson shows Maria how to use the camera, and once she starts using it, she begins to see the world through a whole new lens. Finding herself unable to resist continuing to learn and improve her eye as a photographer, Maria becomes obsessed with capturing the little moments of life around her through the miraculous ability to capture living moments in still images.

Although life with perpetually abusive, drunken and philandering husband Sigge (Mikael Persbrandt) is a constant challenge, Maria finds through her photography a measure of independence and dignity that frees her mentally from the grimness of her situation. Soon she finds herself something of a village celebrity, being called upon to capture with her camera everything from Christmas photos of entire families to the Victorian death portrait of a child.

The film, like much of Troell's work, is epic in scope, focusing on working class people against the backdrop of the socialist revolution, worker strikes, poverty and the Great War; at the same time, this film is very intimate and personal, telling the story of this one woman against the broader canvas. Beautifully shot in a muted tone that evokes both the time period and its working-class setting, the film captures both the beauties and tragedies in the lives of Maria and her children, while the finely structured narrative connects the audience with the courageous, deeply empathetic Maria.

The film is very difficult to watch at times; Troell immerses us in Maria's life, in particular her relationship with her violent husband, and it's a bit of an emotional challenge to watch this otherwise intelligent, vibrant woman continue to stay with a man who beats her in violent jealous rages while pursuing other women himself, and even threatening to kill her in front of their children. Fortunately, though, Maria's spunk and spirit are always at the forefront of the tale, and Troell's expert storytelling and some outstanding performances combine to keep the film from feeling overly bleak.

Everlasting Moments turned out to be one of the hits of Telluride; after a sparsely attended initial screening, word of mouth started to spread on the gondola and in lines; the next screening, held in a much larger venue, was packed, and the fest ended up having to add TBA screenings to accommodate the crowds demanding to see the film. Very positive critical response and overall buzz from Telluride should help the film pop when it opens to the cinephile crowds at the upcoming Toronto International Film Festival. If you're attending the fest yourself and wondering which of the 270 or so films to work into your schedule, Everlasting Moments is one to put at the top of your list.

What's unsaid is that we can sense a real emotional connection forming between these two, but anyone expecting mad passionate outbursts, or even palpable romance, has come to the wrong movie, and not just because both Maria and Pedersen are married and attached to their spouses even though logically they shouldn't be.

For "Everlasting Moments" is not a bolt out of the blue movie, where everything irrevocably changes overnight. Echoing the way photographs are developed in the darkroom, only gradually does picture taking make changes in Maria's life, only little by little does she accept that she has "the gift of seeing" and, in Pedersen's words, "if you're a person who sees, you have no choice but to do so."

Though that process, helped enormously by Heiskanen's exquisitely alive performance, takes awhile, it doesn't take but five minutes of exposure to "Everlasting Moments' " pleasures for us to know that that time is going to be well spent. We know almost at once that we'll be both happy to go with this film wherever it chooses and not be disappointed when it gets there.

Yeats uses the carving to meditate on the role of art in an essentially tragic world.

Zero Focus (ゼロの焦点 / Zero no Shoten) is a 2009 film directed by Isshin Inudo. It’s based on a mystery novel written by Seicho Matsumoto which was originally serialized in Hoseki magazine from March 1958 to January 1960. The story was previously adapted to film by Yoshitaro Nomura in 1961.
The year is 1961, and in a wintry Tokyo train station, a young newlywed named Teiko bids farewell to her handsome new husband, Kenichi. Kenichi is concluding some business in the northern city of Kanazawa, promising a return on December 12, at which point the couple will begin their new life together. But, as Teiko waits, the 12th comes and goes and no word arrives from Kenichi. Soon Kenichi’s employers are phoning, expressing first curiosity and then alarm. Teiko’s only clue to her husband’s whereabouts is a pair of strange postcards she finds among his belongings, each picturing a house in the snowy northern provinces. When her husband’s employers invite her to Kanazawa to help them locate Kenichi, this naïve young bride soon finds herself embroiled in a mystery whose complications include prostitution, suicide, and maybe even murder.

It sounds a lot like Hitchcock, and there’s a good reason for that. Adapted from a mystery novel by Seicho Matsumoto for director Yoshitaro Nomura, Zero Focus is one of several successful collaborations between the two that draw on Western-style technique to approximate the same atmosphere of suspense and danger for which Hitchcock was by that time already well known. That’s not to say that Zero Focus is in any way a knock-off; Nomura had his own technique, and it was a good one. But the comparison serves to show how many of Zero Focus’s devices – the mouse-trap plot, the slow reveal, our heroine’s voyage from innocence to revelation – are familiar to moviegoers as Hitchcock’s stock in trade.

What’s most original – and best – about Zero Focus is its marvelous atmosphere. Nomura sets his action in a civilized world perched in the shadow of the menace of nature. Teiko’s trip to northern Japan takes her from the comforts of the city to a snowbound, provincial landscape fraught with natural peril: here cliffs tower over raging, icy seas, shanty communities perch along rocky slopes, gorges open up beneath roadways, and snow falls ceaselessly. As Kenichi’ s double life comes into focus for Teiko, this landscape becomes ever more threatening, until at last this guileless young wife has cause to wonder if she’ s in mortal danger herself.

Zero Focus is smartly crafted and its Western-style score underlines what’s most frightening in the proceedings. But the film’s real triumph is Takashi Kawamata’s awesome black and white cinematography, which captures simultaneously the beauty and terror of Japan’s forbidding northern frontier. Zero Focus has faults; its third act, in particular, depends too much on expository flashback, and in several instances these scenes go on for too long, belaboring psychological nuance that has already been made clear. But thanks are due to Home Vision Entertainment (whose DVD release includes a modicum of extras) for making this spooky and engrossing minor mystery available, at long last, to Western eyes.

Dedicated to both his late father and Francois Truffaut's fictional alter ego, Antoine Doinel, Masahiro Kobayashi's "Where Are You?" takes the Nipponese helmer's numbing brand of dramatic minimalism to a new level. Typically stripped of most dialogue, but even thinner on content than usual, this lonely teen's search for an emotional lifebuoy will have most auds searching for the exit. Beyond indulgent fests, it's DOA.

Opening with five minutes of black screen, during which a wistful song is heard, the pic centers on long-haired Kawai (Yuto Kobayashi, the helmer's son), who's fired from his supermarket job after his friend (Tokio Emoto) snitches on him for pilfering food. Faced with a $6,000 bill for his mother's hospital and funeral expenses, Kawai steals her body and sends it off in a small boat. He then heads to Tokyo to find someone whose identity is only revealed at the end. Pic's press notes contain far more detail than the finished film, which consists of endless scenes of Kawai walking away from the camera, wolfing down fast food and generally behaving like a jejune teen from countless Japanese indies. Endemic corruption moves renegade cops to bend the rules in the cause of justice in "The Laughing Policeman," a literal, old-fashioned but satisfying adaptation of a Japanese true-crime novel. Not to be confused with the 1973 Stuart Rosenberg film (or its Swedish source material), the pic uses a jazzy score and velvety-dark look to achieve its noirish aspirations. The popularity of the original novel and a stellar cast should generate respectable B.O. among older viewers on local release mid-November, but the yarn's chatty nature will confine offshore interest to genre and Asian-themed fests.

Jo Sasaki's 2007 novel is the first in the so-called "The Hokkaido Trilogy" and was inspired by corruption in the police force governing Japan's northern island. Set in the capital, Sapporo, the pic begins with the discovery of a strangled policewoman's body in an apartment used by the force's big brass. Senior officials keep the investigation under wraps and, in short order, the dead cop's ex-lover, Sgt. Suguru Tsukui (Hiroyuki Miyasako) -- due to give damning evidence in a corruption hearing in 18 hours' time -- is declared the perp. Police are ordered to shoot him on sight.

Disturbed by the hasty manner in which his squad was pushed off the case, Tsukui's former police partner, smooth saxophonist Sgt. Koichi Saeki (Nao Omori), summons his team to discuss an alternative plan to the sanctioned witch hunt.

With the clock ticking in the background, the story plays out like a solid pulp novel, with multiple plot twists but rarely anything startling. Director Haruki Kadokawa's screenplay gives the feeling of scenes having been diluted or even omitted, and as a result, the revelations have a forced, theatrical quality.

Performances are mostly solid. Both Omori and the sexy but subdued Yasuko Matsuyuki, as Saeki's distaff colleague and possible love interest, exude an intelligence that helps focus the multistranded tale and its ensemble cast. Chiefly cast as a hook for younger auds, Shugo Oshinari is weak as a rookie cop.

Making his first appearance in the directing chair since 1997 sci-fier "The Little Girl Who Conquered Time," prolific producer Kadokawa ("God's Puzzle," "Yamato") works in a style that recalls American urban crimers of the '80s. Seizo Sengen's luxurious lensing makes the most of the frequently beautiful sets, and the jazzy soundtrack uses syncopated rhythms and Julie London's rendition of "Bye Bye Blackbird" to dramatic effect.

Hong Kong may have its Laughing Gor, and now comes Japan's very own Laughing Policeman!

Based on the novel “Haruki Library” by novelist Jo Suzuki, the plot has all the ingredients of a gritty police suspense thriller that plays out just over 24 hours. Literally starting off with a bang, a policeman in Hokkaido leaves behind a suicide note "I didn't sing" before pulling the trigger with a gun to the mouth. Then comes the whirlwind of a media circus on the police force's alleged corruption and its secret slush funds, where cops pocketed money into personal accounts rather than for investigations use, calling attention to its unlawful accounting practices. The Article 100 Committee is soon set up, given powers to call up, in secret, any police officer for investigations and to probe into corruption within its ranks.

The plot further thickens with a seemingly unrelated murder case with a policewoman found dead in a strange apartment premise with ownership links back to the cops, and the precinct cops told to beat it when HQ representatives consisting the elite top brass, muscle their way to take over the investigations. It soon wraps with the Special Crime Task Force given the kill order for the accused detective Tsukui (Hiroyuki Miyasako), which we all should know, amongst the police force, would be something that would send shockwaves throughout the organization since they are going after one of their own.

Naturally all cops are tensed, with their organization reputation at stake and an investigations that seem more to be a cover up than thorough, and a group of policemen and woman decide to band together and work outside of the system to unravel all the mysteries involved in this complex web of intrigue. Led by Saeki (Nao Omori), they set up a shadow investigations unit at the Black Bird Jazz Bar, opened by an ex-cop, and call their rag-tag group The Laughing Policeman, giving themselves some 15 hours to solve the murder, and to deliver Tsukui to the Article 100 Committee when they find out that he might have been framed as his appointment with the Committee has been leaked, that he probably holds crippling information and whose testimony could bring down some folks at the top.

And so the stage is set for many dizzying twists and turns, where allegiance to the police organization, and amongst The Laughing Policeman get called into question from time to time. It just gets to you when integrity even amongst the unofficial grouping gets put under the spotlight, never being able to trust intentions. With careers at stake, you would know how hard it is to have to go against your employer, and the dilemma here is of course to either uphold justice which is what is morally right in the career of choice, or to take the more selfish, myopic view of saving one's own skin and be part of the corrupt system to help cover up its ugly tracks.

Director Haruki Kadokawa handled all the plot threads like a seasoned professional, opting not for quick edits and frantic pacing, but for a measured pace despite the race against time gimmick, leaving you room to analyze the clues and to connect the dots. I particularly liked how he had demonstrated the moral dilemma everyone faces, and how lines are drawn in the sand, with the grapevine being the imperfect tool to get to those wanting to assist in blowing the whistle, and to get some help from within official resources. Kadokawa designed plenty of moments that keep you guessing who's trustworthy, and who's not, with some buddy-cop brotherhood like a typical Hong Kong thriller thrown in for good measure as well.

With sophistication in how intricate the plot points all spiral like a hydra, this isn't your typical action thriller, so don't be looking out for the next big action sequence. It's more dialogue driven with a couple of surprises thrown up along the way, telling of just how deep the rabbit hole of corruption had been, and the difficulties in working outside the system against one's employer and organization. The cast delivered their roles without much fuss, and against a jazzy blues soundtrack, this film comes as quite the laidback surprise despite its rather abrupt finale.

In the film "Koma", Kawase explores the relationship between fragile and often tense history between Korea and Japan through the relationship that develops between a third generation Korean-Japanese man, who unexpectedly visits the small and quiet village of Koma, and a Japanese woman, a somewhat mysterious inhabitant of the village.

Korean director Hong's "Lost in the Mountains" tells the story of a woman's love-hate relationship with the people closest to her, including a friend, a teacher with whom she had an affair and her ex-boyfriend. It starts when she makes an impromptu visit to see her friend, who lives in Jeonju.

"Butterflies Have No Memories", the film by the director Diaz, depicts the lives of the inhabitants of a remote island far from the Philippines who suffer economic difficulties after a gold mining company withdraws from the town. One day, a sudden visit by a Canadian woman born and raised on the island makes their already troubled lives even more complicated.

'The three of us were working with the concept of the visitor without realizing it. I think it was fate'.

JEONJU - A bunch of mysterious guests have invaded the Jeonju Digital Project ("Visitors"), the centerpiece of the international film festival's award-winning program.

This year, three internationally-known Asian filmmakers - Korea's Hong Sang-soo, Japan's Naomi Kawase and the Philippines' Lav Diaz - have contributed a trio of films whose main plot revolves around the arrival of an unexpected visitor that gets the action going.

"For the past ten years, the Jeonju Digital Project has become like a kind of trademark and is recognized by various film festivals around the world", JIFF Director Min Byung-lock said after a press preview on Saturday.

The Jeonju Digital Project won the Jury Award at the Locarno International Film Festival in 2007, the first time in the history of the film festival that a project of this kind had won the prize.

Every year, three directors from around the world are invited to contribute a 30-minute short and awarded 50 million won ($38,760) to get the job done. Their work is then premiered at the festival.

"We have invited three well-known directors who are already recognized internationally to participate in the project, so we are expecting the project to win awards at international film festivals again this year", he added.

"Visitors", the title of this year's project, features films: "Lost in the Mountains" by Hong, "Koma" by Kawase and "Butterflies Have No Memories" by Diaz.

"After I finished the film, I was surprised to realize that the three of us were working with the concept of the visitor, without realizing it in advance. I think it was fate", Kawase said.

As the Japanese director noted, the dramatic tension in all three films is built around the sudden arrival of an unexpected visitor.

"The film is about the prosperity development brings and the environmental destruction it causes", Diaz said.

"The idea to film in black and white was my sort of strategic decision to bring into relief the dark side of the Philippines' history, hidden behind its beautiful natural scenes", he added.

Don't worry if you missed the chance to see this award-winning film over the weekend.

It will be screened one last time at 2 p.m. on Wednesday at CGV, a theater affiliated with the festival.

Those who haven't been to the festival in a while needed feel left out either.

A special DVD set featuring all 27 films produced as part of the project over the last nine years is being released in celebration of the festival's 10th anniversary under the title Jeonju Digital Project 2000-2008.

There are so many film festivals in Korea that it's difficult to stand out. But the Jeonju International Film Festival has weathered the competition in the past decade, thanks to its unwavering focus on promising filmmakers and their digital projects.

In 2000, the festival introduced its first Digital Project as a core event, focusing on the future of digital movies. Since then, 27 filmmakers from around the world have joined the project, producing digital short films. What's notable is the organizers' attempt to broaden horizons, featuring European and African filmmakers in 2007 and 2008.

This year, however, the Jeonju Digital Project ("Visitors") has returned to Asian filmmakers to celebrate its 10th anniversary.

"When we first launched the project in 2000, we set a new standard by helping promising filmmakers across the world to make digital films. This year, we are featuring three Asian filmmakers ahead of the anniversary", said Min Byung-lock, chief festival organizer, at a news conference in downtown Seoul on Tuesday.

The featured filmmakers are Hong Sang-soo from Korea, Naomi Kawase from Japan and Lav Diaz from the Philippines.

Hong, who directed "Virgin Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors", the opening film for the first Jeonju film festival, said that it will be his first digital short film project. His reputation as a filmmaker is likely to raise expectations about his new project "Lost in the Mountains".

The 30-minute film follows Mi-sook, who visits Jeonju to discover her close friend and ex-flame share a shocking secret.

Naomi Kawase, another participant of the project, acquired fame as the youngest winner of the Golden Camera Award at the Cannes International Film Festival for her first feature film, "Suzaku", in 1997. She then cemented her position as a leading filmmaker by winning the Grand Prix at Cannes for her film "The Mourning Forest of Mogari" in 2007.

For the Jeonju project, she will introduce "Koma", a tale with a heavy Korean influence. "There was a town named Koma in Japan, and I felt the place bears some features reminiscent of Korea's Goryeo period, and that's why I set out to work on this film", she said.

Lav Diaz, who won the Orizzonti Grand Prize at the Venice International Film Festival with his film "Melancholia" in 2008, joins the project with "Butterflies Have No Memories".

"This is a film set in an island in the Philippines where its environment is destroyed, and I want to show that the environment, once damaged, tends to be a serious problem for many people for a long period of time", Diaz said.

"Acting was a new experience for me. If I had more time, I would have done better", said Hero from the music group TVXQ at a news conference after the screening of the movie "Postman to Heaven" on November 9.

As the second telecinema production, which is produced both as a movie and TV drama, "Postman to Heaven" was directed by Lee Hyeong-min, who also directed "Sorry, I Love You". The script was written by Eriko Kitakawa, who also wrote the Japanese TV drama "Long Vacation", starring Takuya Kimura.

"Postman to Heaven" is about a young entrepreneur who embarks on delivering letters to paradise from people who cannot forget the deceased. One day he meets a woman who joins his cause. Hero plays the postman Jae-jun. "It was difficult for me to portray feelings because it was my first time acting. We were able to complete the shoot without problems thanks to the director and Hyo-joo, who helped a lot", said Hero.

On the question whether the other TVXQ members supported him as an actor, Hero said, "When we were filming the movie, TVXQ was preparing for a comeback. My bandmates were too busy to provide me with advice. But U-Know and Chang-min, who are very interested in acting, encouraged me to do my best".

Actress Han Hyo-joo, who plays opposite Hero and portrays a woman who regains her ability to love after meeting Jae-jun, said that she decided to take this role because she was attracted to the telecinema genre. "In terms of the plot and emotions, this production is reminiscent of a fairy tale, but it strikes a chord in my heart more than a well-written novel or essay", said Han.

On the question whether acting opposite an idol singer was great pressure for her, Han said, "To be honest, it was big pressure but once we started shooting it all disappeared. Hero learns fast. He reacted very promptly to my acting. He has big potential as an actor".

IRIS (director: Kim Kyoo-tae and Yang Yoon-ho) was produced by Taewon Entertainment, famous for movies such as "Marrying the Mafia" and 'Eye for an Eye'. About 80% of the staff came from the movie circle including director Yang Yoon-ho who produced 'Fighter in the Wind' and "Holiday".

Taewon Entertainment is considering releasing a movie version of "IRIS" after its 20 episodes are over. The movie version is currently in production along with the drama. "Differentiated characters, fantastic video images and always brand new episodes as shown in US dramas such as 'CSI' and 'Prison Break' will be presented based on know how we earned from working in Chungmuro", said Jeong Tae-won, representative of Taewon Entertainment with confidence.

◇'The Relation of Face, Mind and Love'

Unlike "IRIS", 'The Relation of Face, Mind and Love (released on Nov. 5)' is the first part of 'Tele Cinema7' project organized by Samhwa Networks, a production company of dramas such as 'Mom's Dead Upset' and 'First Wives' Club'.
A newly coined term of broadcasting and film, 'Tele Cinema 7' is a joint project of Korea and Japan. Japanese writer is in charge of scenario and Korean director in production. 7 works with 120 min each are aired in TV and hit the screen in Korea and Japan, respectably.

◆Understanding and respect of each format are critical= Drama and its movie version are simultaneously produced for several reasons. They are same genre. With recent trend of filming using digital tools, barriers regarding human resources and technological cooperation have become disappeared. As market conditions regarding investment and sales in each drama and movie have been deteriorated a breakthrough such as convergence of formats is needed.
"Market condition is so deteriorated that independent production alone is not enough to survive. What emerges as an alternative for breakthrough is 'One Source Multi Use', which involves co-production with foreign partners", one official from Samhwa Networks said, "it is considered that synergy effect increases more when convergence is made in the stage of planning than when a product is already finished".
One of the reasons why a drama, "IRIS" is popular is that with pre-production its quality improves a lot", said Shim Young-sup, a movie critic. "Talents from

the movie industry can contribute to the quality of TV dramas and directors of TV dramas can increase efficiency of the movie industry because they know well about dramas", Shim expected.
Convergence of broadcasting and movie can be an alternative to overcome the limit of each genre but adaptation to each other is said to be critical. In other words, drastic abbreviation and condensation are made possible in a movie but not in a drama even with the same story. What should also be understood is that narration of a drama is different from that of a movie. And difference in terms of production style in both genres should be respected.

That's why drama version of a movie, "Freind, Our Story" was over with such low viewership and movies produced by PD-turned-film directors such as 'Romantic Island' received harsh criticism that it was not a movie but a 2-hour trendy drama. "Take as an example Japan where 'Production Committee' consisting of experts from movie, broadcasting and publication is put into place. The broadcasting sector is so influential that unique features of a movie are not well reflected. Rather, works without distinctiveness and stereotyped works tend to be made in mass", said Jung Ji-wook, a movie critic, "I hope the convergence of movie and drama is a chance to overcome the limits of the two genres and to maximize synergy effects with understanding and respect of the two genres

Three members of Dong Bang Shin Gi, aka TVXQ, are moving into the acting world.

TV producer Samhwa Networks announced Tuesday that Max, the youngest of the five-member boy band, has been cast as the main man for a new drama series scheduled to air later this year. The English title of the program has not been decided yet, but in Korean it can be translated as "Paradise Ranch".

Other group members will be busy in front of the camera as well. U-Know has been selected to play the lead role for MBC-TV's "No Limit", which airs September 9. Lead singer Hero will appear in SBS-TV's short television movie "Postman to Heaven" later this year.

Convergence of broadcasting and movie can be an alternative to overcome the limit of each genre but adaptation to each other is said to be critical. In other words, drastic abbreviation and condensation are made possible in a movie but not in a drama even with the same story. What should also be understood is that narration of a drama is different from that of a movie. And difference in terms of production style in both genres should be respected.

That's why drama version of a movie, "Freind, Our Story" was over with such low viewership and movies produced by PD-turned-film directors such as 'Romantic Island' received harsh criticism that it was not a movie but a 2-hour trendy drama. "Take as an example Japan where 'Production Committee' consisting of experts from movie, broadcasting and publication is put into place. The broadcasting sector is so influential that unique features of a movie are not well reflected. Two members of the boy band Big Bang have been cast in the TV movie "19-Nineteen".

This isn't the first time the two Big Bang members have been on screen.

T.O.P. (Choi Seung-hyeon), the oldest in the band, debuted in the 2007 KBS-TV drama "I Am Sam" and is currently shooting KBS-TV's "IRIS".

Seung Ri, the youngest in the group, was the main character in the musical "Sonagi" last year.

He also appeared in "Why Did You Come to My House - Movie", a movie starring Kang Hye-jeong released last month.

"19-Nineteen", a movie with stories by Japanese writers filmed by Korean directors, talks about three 19-year-olds involved in a murder.

The singers will be playing the young students along with Korean actress Heo Yi-jae.

But acting isn't the only thing that T.O.P. (Choi Seung-hyeon) and Seung Ri have been working on for this movie.

According to the film's director, Jang Yong-woo, the two young men have each written songs for the soundtrack as well.

Both of them performed their songs on the stage Wednesday, T.O.P. (Choi Seung-hyeon), a rap song, while Seung Ri, a sad ballad.

The movie will be airing on Korea's SBS-TV and Japan's Asahi-TV this September.

The Seoul Independent Film Festival 2008 will be held from December 11 through 19 at various theaters in Seoul. Having established in 1975, the 34-year-old film festival has fulfilled its mission of promoting the status of independent films in Korea. This year's slogan "Storm of Imagination" represents the role of independent films in today's society as a social critique and innovator.

This year's opening film will be "Let the Blue River Run", a story about two teenagers and their families in Yeonbyeon, China, near the North Korean border. The competition for full-length feature films will include award-winning "Land of Scarecrows", "A Camel Doesn't Leave Desert", "Exhausted", and "How to Live on Earth". The short film category boasts a crowded field this year with 28 entries, including "Seven Superheroes vs. Monster F" and "3PM, One Spring Day".

The festival will also show some noted films from abroad. Documentaries "The Deported" by Mahbub Alam and "LEE KYUNG-HAE" by Daniel Tromben Rojas" have been invited for Korean screening. French films "La Vie Nouvelle" and "Ma Mere" and a Japanese film entitled "Slave" are among the foreign films to be presented at the special screening session.

n the November issue of Empire, out now, we not only have two spiffing New Moon posters but also the lowdown on the second instalment in the Twilight series. And we got Chris Weitz and Taylor Lautner to explain why this one’s harder-edged and more man-friendly.

“You’ve got the werewolves coming in,” said Weitz, “and the effects are going to be great on that part of the movie. Also, there’s more fighting and that should appeal to the boys. There is also a male character, Jacob, who is inherently a more viable character for most boys because he’s like an ordinary guy. He works on cars, whereas Edward is a perfect man, and maybe he only appeals to perfect men. That makes the demographic rather small! So there’s more of a way into this one – we do hope to up the male demographic!

Never before has a date in history been so significant to so many cultures, so many religions, scientists, and governments. “2012″ is an epic adventure about a global cataclysm that brings an end to the world and tells of the heroic struggle of the survivors.

2012: Doomsday is a drama starring Dale Midkiff as Dr. Frank Richards, Cliff De Young as Lloyd, Ami Dolenz as Susan, and Danae Nason as Sarah. Lloyd has discovered the world is about to be subjected to an extreme climate change due to a gravitational pull by a black hole. But in reality
the extreme climate change is an ancient prophecy that is about to be fulfilled. Warning: My movie review contains plot spoilers.

2012: Doomsday is extremely boring. I rented it because I thought it was going to be an action packed natural disaster destruction movie. I guess I should have paid more attention to the box cover because the movie is a Modern Christian retelling of the rapture which isn’t necessarily bad if it wouldn’t have been so boring. I actually like Christian movies. I really enjoyed the Left Behind series but 2012: Doomsday is just so boring and not at all comparable to other great Christian movies.

The movie flips around between three central groups. Dr. Frank Richards has found a golden crucifix that he must use to unlock a room in an ancient temple. His ex-wife accompanies him but dies along the way. Sarah is a missionary in Mexico who escorts a pregnant woman to the temple. She is accompanied by Alex, a photographer, but he dies along the way too. Susan is a paramedic in California who is drawn to the Mexico because of childhood dreams so she travels to Mexico with her mother. Her mother disappears along the way, assumed to be taken the Rapture. Lloyd drives to Mexico to find his daughter Sarah and picks up Susan along the way. So they all meet each other, reach the temple, and accomplish their goal of seeing the pregnant woman’s baby born. The movie never technically says the baby is “Jesus” but it sure implies it. That is my main gripe with the plot. Jesus doesn’t need to be reborn again. He has already been born once and that is enough. Wouldn’t that make the baby the antichrist? I think the writer needs to read Revelations again.

There is some 2012 millenarianism growing out there proposing that cataclysmic or transformative events will occur in the year 2012. A lot of this talk centers on what some people see as a “prediction” made by the Mayan people that comes at the end-date of their Long Count calendar. That count of 5,125 years ends on December 21 or 23,2012 (as best we can calculate). Online, this discussion has become a cultural meme with interpretations of legends, scriptures, numerological constructions and prophecies.2012film

I have written about it twice before here – once, a general piece this past January and a follow up on the calendar itself in March.

What brings me back to it now is the promotional materials I have been seeing this summer for a new movie “based” on all this.

2012 is an upcoming American science fiction schedule for release in mid-November. The film is directed by Roland Emmerich who also did Independence Day and The Day After Tomorrow. If you have seen either of those films, you can guess that in the new one December 2012 will not be transformative but disastrous.

In the film, a global cataclysm will occur leading to the end of the world. Add to that a US government agency (the “Institute for Human Continuity”) which is taking the Noah’s ark approach to this by trying to build ships to ensure the survival of the human race.

I can’t fault Hollywood for choosing the dark side of the two hypotheses based on the ancient Mayan calendar that ends around the2012 northern hemisphere winter solstice. I suppose that the “dawning of a new age” sounds very “new age” and probably doesn’t suggest blockbuster special effects.

But there is that side in all the 2012 speculation too. The antidote to the doomsday interpretation is that Earth and its people will undergo a positive physical or spiritual transformation which will begin with that solstice.

The idea that a global “consciousness shift” has been promoted by a number of authors. Frank Waters wrote about it back in 1975 when it was definitely not a pop meme. He connected it with Native American Hopi prophecies in Mexico Mystique: The Coming Sixth World of Consciousness (which I believe is out of print). Other books that addressed this before all the buzz include The Transformative Vision: Reflections on the Nature and History of Human Expression, The Mayan Factor and Harmonic Convergence.

Daniel Pinchbeck gave it a new age injection by linking it to beliefs about crop circles, alien abduction, and personal revelations in the popular2012: The Return of Quetzalcoatl. He is definitely on the shift-in-consciousness side of this.

Is there any science to this meme? If you believe that it is possible that there will be in 2012 a geomagnetic reversal which could be triggered by a massive solar flare, that sounds like science. This would be a flare with energy equal to 100 billion atomic bombs.

Any proof? Supporters point to observations that the Earth’s magnetic field is weakening, which indicates an impending reversal of the north and south magnetic poles. There are scientists who believe the Earth is overdue for a geomagnetic reversal, and has been for a long time, even since the time of the Mayans, because the last reversal was 780,000 years ago.

Scientists critical of this view say that a geomagnetic reversal would take up to 5,000 years to complete and do not start on any particular date. NASA expects a particularly strong solar maximum sometime between 2010 and2012 but aren’t predicting that it will lead to a geomagnetic reversal. What may happen with a solar maximum is a lot of screwed up satellite and cellular phone communications.

Or, you can take my wife’s approach that December 2012 will be like the big Y2K scare and that the results will be not a bang, not even a whimper but that our GPS might not work for awhile and we won’t get any text messages – which is not all bad.

A lottery for survival is a cute idea, but let’s face it, if humanity is ever faced with extinction, it won’t be a chance drawing that determines who carries on our species. It’s all going to come down to who’s invested in personal rocket crafts, which I assume will be only the Japanese. Avantika is a teacher in a university in Delhi. She has come back from New York where she teaches, because her father has suffered a heart attack. During this period, she meets a temporary Professor called Ehsaan Khan. Soon they begin seeing each other and love blossoms. A few months later, Avantika receives a call from her university in New York, asking her to come back for the Fall Semester. Avantika breaks the news to Ehsaan. He in turn, tells her he doesn't mind coming to the States with her, to find a job. But first they need to get married.

Soon after the marriage, they leave to start a new life in New York. They buy a house in an Indian neighbourhood and move in. Just as they are setting up home, their conservative Muslim neighbours, Hamid and Anjum, invite them over for dinner. The next morning, Salma, one of the women Avantika met the night before at the dinner, visits her under the pretext of gifting her sweets. When Avantika invites her in, Salma tells her that she is in grave danger. Nothing is what it seems. Salma pleads with Avantika to help her. What follows next, is a series of incidents that sucks Avantika into a vortex of danger and intrigue. As her life spirals out of control, Avantika realizes that she is a pawn in a huge game. And no one is to be trusted

It's a tremendous start to the album, what with Salim Merchant coming behind the mike to open 'Shukran Allah' in a manner similar to that of Kailash Kher crooning of 'Subhan Allah' [Fanaa]. Within seconds, Sonu Nigam takes over and you instantly know why he is simply the best that we have today when it comes to crooning melodious romantic tracks. His trademark silky voice is at play once again in this beautifully composed number which easily finds a place at the top of romantic numbers composed by Salim-Sulaiman. If the 'mukhda' is impressive then watch out for the 'antara' - it proves once again why Indian melody can never ever be out of vogue. Shreya Ghoshal joins the scene three and a half minutes into 'Shukran Allah' and makes an instant impact. This is one song that would be played for a long-long time and is easily one of the best that we have heard this year.

Music Review

It's the sound of guitar that lends a modern day feel to 'Dua Hai'. Though the English portion by Marianne D'Cruz has a distinct (and oft repeated sound by Salim-Sulaiman), it's the coming together of Sukhwinder Singh and Kailash Kher which brings in a different dimension to 'Dua Hai'. A fusion 'qawalli' that sees a mix of 'sufi', 'rock' and 'pop' coming together, it's the hook of 'Dua Hai' that keeps the ball rolling for song. While Kailash Kher brings in his own rustic touch to the track, it is usual energy that Sukhwinder Singh brings to the proceedings which make 'Dua Hai' special. Hear it for a couple of times and you would be hooked on for sure.

Salim Merchant gifts himself an entire song as a singer in the form of 'Ali Maula'. A situational track that should play as a part of the film's background, it has the kind of lyrics that may not be comprehendible to the common man. However, in the context of the film, one can well imagine it to be making a huge impact. Rendering a pensive feel to the proceedings with the protagonist kneeling before God to lend enough courage for him to accomplish the impossible, 'Ali Maula' carries trademark Salim-Sulaiman sound. In addition, the 'remix version' is well done too and makes one hit for a couch in the lounge!

Remember the impact that songs like 'Naina' and 'Laakad' had made after they were seen and heard in Omkara? Similar dark, haunting yet romantic touch is pretty apparent in 'Rasiya' which sees a fusion of Indian and Western classical music. Excellently crooned by Shruti Pathak who keeps her voice low for this sensual, romantic and poetic track, 'Naina' is yet another quality song by the young singer who has earlier rendered one of the best tracks ever by Salim and Sulaiman - 'Mar Jaava' [Fashion]. The composers certainly know how to pitch her voice and in what situation. No wonder, 'Rasiya' is pretty much a testimony to this fact.

Soon after this slow moving number comes a highly energetic title song 'Kurbaan Hua' which proves once again that Vishal Dadlani is seriously taking his stint behind the mike. Singing quite regularly now for the compositions created by him along with Shekhar, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy and also Salim-Sulaiman, Vishal rocks the show, literally, with 'Kurbaan Hua'. This is a kind of number which evokes instant reactions and immediate appreciation. 'Kurbaan Hua' is a rock track that completely goes with the action packed theme of the film, hence making one look forward to it's placement in the narrative. Other than 'Shukran Allah', this clearly is the pick of the lot in Kurbaan.

OVERALL

Kurbaan is a quality album all the way and clearly the best that Salim & Sulaiman have offered since Fashion. A difficult album to compose considering the kind of theme that the film comes with, Kurbaan boasts of the kind of sound that is consistent throughout. While quite a few tracks would be noticed more after the release of the film, there are songs like 'Shukran Allah' and 'Kurbaan Hua' that would make sure that Kurbaan makes a good head start at the music stands.

26th July 2005 rang an ominous bell-for most... but amidst all the chaos and the tragedy, it reunited two star crossed ex lovers. 2 people who meet after a hiatus of 6 years-now occupying different worlds. Evidently, they had moved on...

What starts off as a seemingly innocuous encounter on the same flight back to Mumbai-ends up as a rollercoaster ride through some of the darkest hours of Mumbai-as they see the city get swamped with disaster and loss...and are forced to stick together in this time of crisis.

The story shifts perspective between the past and the present- a glorious but crazy past of 2 starkly different people falling in love-the differences at first being exciting. Gradually with time, they journey through the emotional pitfalls attached, the constant bickering, the frantic and urgent making up, and irreconcilable differences-that give way to a final break up. And then we see those very people struggling their way through a stormy night in Mumbai that threatens to take over the city, their fears and insecurities lying bare as their guard drops.

As emotions run high, the two learn more about each other on that night possibly than they knew in all those years of being together- tough situations call on some important revelations and they realize how transient and unpredictable life is and they need to make the most of the time that has been given to them together.

Music Review

Hasn't it become all so predictable when one begins the review of any music coming from the house of Bhatts that has a Pritam and Emraan Hashmi association to it? So many times has a statement being made that 'Good music is pretty much on the cards when forces like Mukesh Bhatt, Mahesh Bhatt, Pritam, Emraan Hashmi and lyricist Sayeed Quadri come together.' After all, their track record over the years has been a testimony to this fact. Hence bowing down to sheer predictability of listening to some real good music once again, one plays on Tum Mile which also has another lyricist Kumaar, who has now become a regular with Pritam, as an added contributor for writing the title song.

With Neeraj Sridhar at the helm of affairs, what does one expect? Another 'Hari Krishna Hare Ram'? Or a 'Aahun Aahun'? Or a 'Chor Bazari'? Well, get set for some surprise as both Pritam and Neeraj make a conscious effort to do something completely different with the title song of 'Tum Mile'. This time around it's the feeling of innocent and pure love that takes centre-stage as Neeraj gets into the shoes of a lovelorn youngster who is plain and simple glad to have found the love of his life. A rhythmic tune that has a much better 'antra' when compared with 'mukhda', 'Tum Mile' has an elaborate setting to it in it's opening version.

However, to one's pleasant surprise, even better versions follow after a while with Javed Ali and Shafqat Amanat Ali getting their own solo versions of the same song. Frankly, the two singers do well in stealing the show this time around. Even though it's the original version which is currently on air due to ingredients that give it a popular appeal , the ones that should turn out to be 'lambi race ka ghoda' are the 'Love Reprise version' by Javed Ali and 'rock version' by Shafqat Amanat Ali.

Javed Ali takes huge strides with his soft rendition in this melodious outing which stays away from excessive musical instruments. On the other hand Shafqat Amanat Ali, who hails from Pakistan, gets another fabulous song under his belt after 'Mitwa' [Kabhi Alvidaa Naa Kehna] with this soft rock version of the title song. All in all, this is a song that grows on you and once the tune is set in mind, there is no stopping.

However, one is always greedy for more when it's a Bhatt-Pritam-Emraan combination and this is where the trump card is out in the form of 'Dil Ibaadat'. If one thought that Tum Mile was fabulous then one listening of 'Dil Ibadat' will quickly make you change loyalties. In this love song, K.K. has a number in hand which could well be an award winning outing if aided by good picturisation. If presented in a highly passionate and dramatic manner, something which goes with the genre of the song, 'Dil Ibadat' could well be the 'Khuda Jaane' [Bachna Ae Haseeno] moment for Pritam.

Special mention is reserved for the oriental touch to the arrangements which gives that added edge to 'Dil Ibadat' that also sees a 'rock version' as the album progresses. This is where one begins to draw comparisons with Pritam's soundtrack of Life In A Metro since that too belonged to a similar space.

The signature tune that is currently being heard along with the promos of Tum Mile kick starts 'Tu Hi Haqeeqat', which is yet another solo, this time Javed Ali at the helm of affairs. By this time, one realizes that the album is made of all-male singers. In fact this could well be the first ever instance for the music of a film with romance as it's strong point not to be featuring any female voice at all. Coming back to 'Tu Hi Haqeeqat', it is not as strong as the title song or 'Dil Ibaadat' but that's purely on a comparative scale. Rendered by Javed Ali, this one has a core Indian feel to it and is the easiest tune to grasp. Perhaps this is the very reason one looks forward to the songs that follow since in Tum Mile one doesn't expect Pritam to churn out a conventional Bollywood tune.

It's a journey into the 'youngistan' world with Mohit Chauhan taking listeners right into a campus through 'Iss Jahaan Mein'. A lively number with fast paced arrangements and a definite rhythm to it, 'Iss Jahan Mein' still manages to get a melodic base to it. Also, one has heard Mohit Chauhan in quite a few slow moving tracks earlier, most of which are quite sober in appeal. However, this time around he also lets his hair down and with an innocent appeal to it; 'Iss Jahan Mein' does carry enough potential to be yet another 'Junoon' [New York].

K.K. returns to the scene with 'O Meri Jaan' and makes sure that he gets to croon some of the best tracks in the album. This time around it's a sad outing for the entire team which makes sure that the song turns out to be an emotionally charged affair, whether in terms of composition, writing or singing. This one is again straight out of the kind of genre that Life In A Metro had established a few years back. If you had liked the songs back then, there is no reason why they won't work now in the context of Tum Mile.

Finally comes 'Soul Of Tum Mile' and as expected, this four minutes piece begins with the sound of a thunderstorm. There is a slow and steady movement in this instrumental piece which shows an escalation coming in at just the right junctures. Boasting of an international appeal, this piece become more intriguing 100 seconds down the line, hence ensuring that it would add on to the dramatic quotient as a part of the film's background during some intense dramatic moments in the film.

OVERALL

2009 is clearly Pritam's year. If he has enjoyed the biggest musical success in the form of Love Aaj Kal then he has also seen a steady success run of New York. If at the beginning of the year he gave multiple item hits in Billu then he has also got some pure and fresh music in place for Tum Mile. In between he has found some good tunes rolling for All The Best and Dil Bole Hadippa too, which re-establishes the fact that he is clearly THE most prolific hit-maker that we have in Bollywood today. This is what he proves yet again with Tum Mile where he gives Bhatts their very own Life In A Metro to be preserved and relished for years to come.

Music Review

EXPECTATIONS

Since Aao Wish Karein gives the perception of a romantic entertainer; one does expect music to play a reasonably important role in the film. Also, since composers Ankur Tewari and Xulfi had come up with a couple of tracks worth humming in Ek Chalis Ki Last Local, one expects a certain quality from their soundtrack of Aao Wish Karein.

Beginning of Aao Wish Karein is surprising though with ‘Sabse Peeche Hum Khade‘ kick starting the proceedings. This is the same song that Mohit Chauhan had sung and had featured in the film Let’s Enjoy. This time around it is Kunal Ganjawala who comes behind the mike for this melodious track that has an old world charm to it. Since the song has been heard over all these years, there is an instant recall value and it doesn’t take much time to hum this Ankur Tewari written and composed number all over again.

Reh Jaane Do‘ with the trademark sound of guitar strings. A soft sounding pop track that has a sad connotation to it, ‘Reh Jaane Do‘ moves at a very slow pace with focus on lyrics and rendition rather than any beats that could have otherwise diluted the overall impact. The song may not be the pick of the current season since it’s not the kind that could be sung around the streets. However, hear it in the context ofthe film ’s narrative and it could make for a good background score. Also, after a promising beginning, its ‘antara’ doesn’t quite manage to hold one’s attention.

In the similar mode comes ‘Tum Mere Ho‘ which is a romantic duet by Kunal Ganjawala and Sunidhi Chauhan. By now, the mood of the album is pretty much established as each of thesongs so far has followed the same theme without getting into any tangents. The focus is not on creating a chartbuster song that would rock the dance floors or be played on highways. Instead, emphasis is on coming up with the kind of soundtrack that goes well with the soft and simple mood ofthe film, an atmosphere that composers Ankur Tewari and Mikey Mccleary manage to create in ‘ Tum Mere Ho‘.

Xulfi comes up with the best track of the album in the form of ‘Kuch Aisa‘ (which comes in both the upbeat and ’sad version’). If there is a song that deserves to be heavily promoted as of this very moment, it is ‘Kuch Aisa‘. Unfortunately, since there is a very small window between the music and the film release, it seems like quite a difficult task for this romantic melodious number to reach out to its target audience in a big way. It’s the kind of song that most film makers would have loved to incorporate in their films as Xulfi has done quite well in playing the triple role of singer, composer and lyricist (with Danish Khan).

The last song of the album, ‘Sab Yahaan Hain‘, though doesn’t quite lead to similar sentiments. Set as a celebration song in a 50’s mode, this Kunal Ganjawala sung track aims at getting into a carnival mode. However, it’s playing time would be relegated to the screen time that it gets on the big screen since it is a hardcore situational song. A number about the wish coming true for the lead protagonist inthe film (played by Aftab Shivdasani), ‘ Sab Yahaan Hain‘ is written and composed by Ankur Tewari with Mikey Mccleary joining in.

OVERALL

As stated earlier, it is apparent that the makers of Aao Wish Karein didn’t quite have a chartbuster musical in mind when they came together to make music for the film. This is why the mood of the album remains situational for most part of it. Though none of the songs are bad per se, there isn’t a hit quality to them either that would make the album sell like hot cakes. Hear it for some soulful moments in ‘Kuch Aisa‘ and ‘Sabse Peeche Hum Khade‘.

the new movie ‘Bumper Offer’ was all set to hit the screens today but then the makers have announced that the film will now be hitting the screens on the 23rd of this month.

Sharing his thoughts, executive producer Shankar Ganesh said that the audio has been getting a real good response and Raghu Kunche’s music is a plus point.

He also added that hero Sairam Shankar would be seen in a new avatar and Bindu Madhavi looks very glamorous. He stated that the film is made under the Vaishno Academy banner which came up with movies like ‘Idiot’ ‘Amma Naana O Tamil Ammayi’.

Puri Jagan’s Vaishno Academy new movie with Sairam Shankar is titlled as Bumper Offer. Bindu Madhavi (Avakai Biryani fame) is doing female lead. Jaya Ravindra – a protégé of Puri Jagan directs this movie. The shooting of the movie is complete but for a couple of songs to be shot in Bangkok. Puri Jagan started audio company called ‘Puri Sangeet’ and will be releasing Bumper Offer music on that label on 5 September. Popular singer Raghu Kunche is turning music director with this movie. Puri Jagan also provides story and dialogues for Bumper Offer.

A movie on the life of one of the greatest of the rulers of Kerala has been in the rounds for the last two decades. In fact, MT Vasudevan Nair, one of the master scriptwriters of all times, had been on this thinking from the days of his ‘Oru Vadakkan Veergatha’ which came out in 1989. Now after 18 years from this epoch making movie, ‘Pazhassi Raja’ is slowly but steadily shaping up under the directorial ship of ace director Hariharan,to become the biggest epic movie of our times.

The movie which was in the making since May, last year is into its last session which will get completed with another 25 days of shoot. Most of the important scenes of the movie are shot with four cameras working simultaneously. The movie planned with the biggest ever budget for a Malayalam movie (rumored to be more than eight crores), is produced by Gokulam Gopalan, who also consider the movie as his prestige project.

This magnum opus is expected to bring out the story of the first organized revolt against British rule, led by Kerala Varma Pazhassi Raja of the Padinjare Kovilakom of the Kottayam family near Thalassery in Kannur district.

“The story of ‘Pazhassi Raja’ one of our first, but least known freedom fighters, appealed to me also because it offered tremendous visual possibilities in the backdrops of the forests and the wars. We know about the high expectations people have on the film and are confident that we will be able to live up to it”, says the director Hariharan.

‘Pazhassi Raja’ popularly known as the Lion of Kerala isn’t well known outside Kerala, but he was one of our country’s first freedom fighters. He had to reckon with the armies of the Mysore rulers as well as the British. The British first used him against Tipu’s army and then reneged on their treaty. And more, the Raja was agitated by the unpopular revenue policy followed by the East India Company in Malabar .He then threatened to stop collecting taxes if the Company continued with this mode of revenue collection. Even before the much celebrated Sepoy Mutiny of 1857, Raja spear headed an attack against the British who made a futile attempt to capture the Raja in his own palace at Pazhassi in April 1796.

The British company then made proclamations which forbid people from supporting the Raja, threatening to confiscate the property of all who are supporting Pazhassi. In 1797 the Raja’s men launched attack on the security personnel stationed at Pazhassi, and in continuous battles that were fought over three days, Pazhassi’s men were able to overpower the British forces, using swords, spears, bows and arrows . With an army of thousands of Nairs , Pazhassi inflicted such defeat on the British that they were forced to retreat and negotiate. This forced the British to sign a temporary armistice, in accordance with Raja’s wishes.

‘Pazhassi Raja’ once again revolted against the occupants when the British decide to take over Wynad in 1799, after the fall of Sreerenga Patanam. This time the British had an upper hand as they controlled most of the south. They confiscated Raja’s properties and proclaimed a reward for capturing him. Raja who fled from the palace, took refuge in the jungles accompanied by his wife and immediate attendants.

Raja tried to continue his warfare with the help of aadivasas and his loyal Kurichiyar tribe. Using guerrilla tactics and informers, he kept the British on tenterhooks for longer than any other regional ruler. But on November 30 1805, the Raja was surrounded by Thomas Harvey Babar, a young British officer on charge of suppressing Pazhaassi and was shot dead in an operation on the banks of Mavila Thodu.

Hariharan, MT Vasudevan Nair and Mammootty, are sure that they are in the making of and a film that will become a milestone in Malayalam cinema.

Even before the much celebrated Sepoy Mutiny of 1857, Raja spear headed an attack against the British who made a futile attempt to capture the Raja in his own palace at Pazhassi in April 1796.
The British company then made proclamations which forbid people from supporting the Raja, threatening to confiscate the property of all who are supporting Pazhassi. In 1797 the Raja’s men launched attack on the security personnel stationed at Pazhassi, and in continuous battles that were fought over three days, Pazhassi’s men were able to overpower the British forces, using swords, spears, bows and arrows . With an army of thousands of Nairs , Pazhassi inflicted such defeat on the British that they were forced to retreat and negotiate. This forced the British to sign a temporary armistice, in accordance with Raja’s wishes.

‘Pazhassi Raja’ once again revolted against the occupants when the British decide to take over Wynad in 1799, after the fall of Sreerenga Patanam. This time the British had an upper hand as they controlled most of the south. They confiscated Raja’s properties and proclaimed a reward for capturing him. Raja who fled from the palace, took refuge in the jungles accompanied by his wife and immediate attendants.
Raja tried to continue his warfare with the help of aadivasas and his loyal Kurichiyar tribe. Using guerrilla tactics and informers, he kept the British on tenterhooks for longer than any other regional ruler. But on November 30 1805, the Raja was surrounded by Thomas Harvey Babar, a young British officer on charge of suppressing Pazhaassi and was shot dead in an operation on the banks of Mavila Thodu.
Hariharan, MT Vasudevan Nair and Mammootty, are sure that they are in the making of and a film that will become a milestone in Malayalam cinema.
Pazhassi Raja is a historical subject. Mammootty, Hariharan and MT Vasudevan Nair who gave Oru Vadakkan Veeragaatha to malayalam cinema is now doing this film. The story is all about a King who belong to Kottayam royal family, revolt against the Britishers. Till today, most of the Indians will say “Sepoy Mutiny of 1857″ as the first war of Independence. But, Pazhassi raja was the first Indian who fought against British in 1796. Mammotty plays the role of Raja, and Kanika, the young heroine plays the wife ( queen ) of Raja. Sarath kumar makes his debut in malayalam as the friend to Raja. Padmapriya plays a tribal village girl role. The film canned by Pan Vision camera and exploits the latest technical advancements for this movie and the release would be in Christmas 2007.

Our sources say that the Oscar Award winner Rasool Pookutty has been offered a chance in Mammootty’s upcoming movie Pazhassi Raja. The movie is already famous for it’s veteran cast and crew. With legendary writer M.T.Vasudevan Nair writing the script for the movie and Hariharan as the director itself the movie has gained its highest standards. In addition to this, is Rasool Pookutty is also going to be a part of this magnum opus historical movie, then there is no doubt that the movie will turn out to be one of the best in Indian Cinema. Megastar Mammotty, who is playing the role of Pazhassi Raja, has also got Tamil actor Sarath Kumar to play the role of his intimate friend.
The movie will have Telugu actor Suman to play the role of the villain called Pazhaiveetan Chandu. The producer Gokulam Gopalan, has already spent a whoppinh 20 Crores for the movie.
